Mitsubish Mirage; Not as well built as a Metro

No, I wouldn't plan to "hoon" in the Mirage. I just want an economical car like the Metro when it becomes impractical to keep a Metro or two going. Eventually rust and parts availability will take them out. I think this seems like the car to replace the Metro based on what people are saying here. Maybe the time to get one is 2017 before the mandated technology crap gets included in the future years.

I feel the same way about the basic Nissan Versa 5-speed. I'd hate to modify a brand new car, but if I got one with a backup camera/touch screen, I'd have to tear it all down and find a better, basic, push-button radio.

Edit: New cars are expensive and out of my budget right now, but I will seriously consider one of the $12k Versa's so I can keep it really clean, have a good family car, and get to brag about and enjoy buying a brand new car at least one time. :thumb

Well my GF had to buy a new car and we test drove and looked at several. She didn't fall in love until we went and looked at a Mirage. She will be getting it this week or next weekend at the latest in the blue color. We will see how it goes. If it goes well, I will seriously consider one in a few years.

I don't want a touch screen radio. I hate touch screens in cars. If the backup camera is separate from the radio and HVAC controls, then fine. Otherwise no thanks!

I seem to recall people here really tearing up the Versa and other Nissan products in general. Someone commented "It is pretty bad when another car is being bashed on a forum dedicated to Geo Metros!" I always thought Nissan was a pretty good make but I guess not based on some of the comments I read. I also remember a similar comment about Chrysler which I agree is very appropriate.

I've seen many cars with the backup camera in the rear view mirror. I prefer button control still. I have a radio that flips out and has touch controls when it is out. I use it as a regular single DIN radio most of the time. I bought it because it was cool and it does work with a backup camera. It is just more hassle than it is worth.

IMO, the backup camera in the review mirror is the best one I've seen.

No way! :lol

I'd find a way to disable it if I ever had a car like it. And yank the stupid touch-screen radio. I'd probably wreck the car trying to change the station, because you have to go through several menus. Why complicate things? I love plain buttons and knobs. Just turn the knob if you want to adjust bass or volume.

The thing I hate about touch screens, at least older ones, is the sensitivity and their wear rate. You really had to smash them and they would become less sensitive.

I just want knobs and a nice, high res, LCD screen. No touch necessary, but a good display with things such as song titles would be cool. Include the clock down there and you're set. You could go further and include the backup camera and etc. information from the engine computer such as tire pressure, weather temp, engine temp, coolant temp, oil pressure, trouble codes, etc that can be pulled from the OBD2 port. If EV can do it with a tablet and Bluetooth, the OEs can do it.

Not so fast

You know, GM had a touchscreen radio/navigation/diagnostic system with hands-free calling... in 1988. B-)

That 80's tech is super awesome. WowCoolWow. Honestly, that's kind of what I expect out of cars these days, but updated.

Recently went up to seattle for a little get away. While driving around up there I saw many of the new mirage on car lots and on the roads.

So the backup cam in the Mirage isn't in the radio? It is separate in the rearview mirror? OK, then this might be something I wouldn't mind.

My parents have an Acura with all the touch screen voice command stuff. They paid extra for it. I would have paid extra NOT to have it! You tell it to turn on the radio and it responds "Air conditioning set to maximum." I am not a fan at all.

It is in the radio. It comes on when you are in reverse. Otherwise, the radio is just radio and navigation...the HVAC controls are separate.
