I have a garmin nuvi I need to enter coordinates in. It only has seven numbers to each enter space. The number I need to enter has eight numbers. The format is set correctly to ddd.dddd. Does anyone know what the problem is? |

If you have coordinates using minutes or minutes and seconds (DDD/MM/SS) and need to convert to degrees.decimal Decimal value = Degrees. (Minutes/60) + (Seconds/3600) If you need to enter three values for longitude (W xxx), you will need to enter a "0" before your two digits. If this doesn't cover it, you can Pm me with the coordinates you have to enter (or change the numbers if it's the location of your stash ) and maybe a picture of your coordinate entry page and I'll help you get the format right or convert if needed.

If your model has the option for coordinate entry format (it should), the easiest way would be to select the H DDD.DDDDD, then enter N 35.07930 W 89.59723 (it may also require a "0" in front of the 89, e.g., W 089) Enter as many numbers it allows after the decimal point The "H" is for Hemisphere - in the US every Latitude will be "N," and Longitude "W" Edited by myredvert, Jan 5 2016, 05:06 PM.

The problem is, the gps will only take seven numbers. It will not allow me to put in all the numbers. Like, 35.07930 Leaving off the 2 on the end 89.59725 Leaving off the last 5 on the end |

That will get you close enough, trust me. At 4+ digits after the decimal, you're only talking about a matter of feet. I would zoom in on the google maps image I sent you in a PM so you can get a good mental picture of what/where your parking area is located. I just checked those numbers on Google maps while leaving the last digit off of each, and it shows the "abbreviated" coordinates to be located at LEAST a good 10-12 feet over in the same parking area.

I would assume all the numbers are important to have to get you to your exact destination. I put in all the numbers and left the last ones off and it directed me to a place about five miles from my starting point and the destination I am attempting to go to is about 20 miles away. I just cannot understand why the right numbers are 8 digits but the stupid gps will only let you put in 7. |

People still use Garmins? Wooo, next they're going to tell me I can still fax I'm just messin' with ya. Seriously though, don't all phones have some kind of navigational gps systems built in now? Mine has since 2010.

While they are all "important," again once you're talking about that many decimal places over its just a few feet. If you look at the Google Maps satellite image I PMed you then enter the coordinates both ways (with /without the last digit), I think you'll find you may be over thinking this one and worrying too much - unless the coordinates aren't being entered in a way your gps likes?? and remember, "automobile" GPSs are good tools, but they don't always do exactly what you expect them to, and there is no "certification" required for their databases. I love 'em, but I still love maps and try my best to retain responsibility for my situational awareness and navigation. Well, ok , usually. Sometimes? ![]() And if you cant figure out the necessary coordinate entry for your parking area and you're into old school navigation, after you cross the Wolf river bridge driving north on 196 from Piperton, in .4 miles just after the road curves slightly to the east you will pass a very similar parking area on your left. 1 more mile to the north after the first parking area the road will curve back to the north, and your parking area will be almost immediately to the left. From the intersection of 57 and 196 in Piperton, it's 2.9 miles. It's the ONLY thing located in that area, if you have a good mental picture of the map it should be extremely easy to find, even without the GPS. |

I know the area pretty well. I know I can find it on google earth and probably go right to it without the gps. I just wanted to be able to use the gps and do nothing but drive straight to it. Would like to figure the numbers thing out too because there are some other areas I want to go to that I do not know and never been too so would surely need it then. This is a older gps but I would not think the numbers thing would have changed. Maybe the newer gps,s have more capabilities in this area and will accept all 8 numbers. I dont know. |

All I can say is I tried, sorry if it didn't solve whatever is tripping you up. Enough of the "all 8 numbers" thing already! Do you not believe me when I said after 5 decimal places it's only a matter of feet difference? ![]() If there is a noticeable discrepancy in the location with the last of your digits left off, then either the gps and/or you are doing something incorrectly. We have a 10 year old CHeap-as He-- Garmin with a never updated database, and even though it can be pretty bad with addresses 9epsecially those that didn;t exist when we got it, it still finds specific coordinates just fine. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Decimal_degrees You are talking less than a meter difference if you leave of the 8th decimal point. If you are farther off than that... you have done something else wrong. Edited by Coche Blanco, Jan 5 2016, 06:02 PM.

It is not that I do not believe you, it is that my gps does not believe you. I entered the seven numbers and it took me somewhere no where near my destination of which the 8 numbers are supposed to be. It is possible that I am doing something wrong but all the numbers are in it but the last digit of each number. |
