That's high grade aluminum. It has zinc properties. Probably any 6000 to 7000 grade would hold up pretty good. You get into the 8000 grade, that's where you get into the aerospace aluminum that has iron/nickel properties, but very pricy. |

Yea, 6000 to 7000 is good. They both look pretty after I polish them... |

Depending on price, you may be able to count me in for more than one set. If you have a hard time meeting a minimum number to get a good price, let me know. |

This is what the Boeing 777 is made of. Good material and durable enough to last. Maybe just have them bare and then MMM could powder coat them.

I'm in for the right price. I've got originals, but my outside driver's has been broken for years, and I have to baby both inside handles. I see the outdoor passenger handle going in the no-so-distant future. Find a price, and let us know first.

I'd be interested in a few sets, inside and outside. Put this topic up at Teamswift.net and you would get quite a few more people interested. |

6 + years on my last inner/ outer door handles......its all in how the outer is adjusted, if your latch is gummy/ worn, if your door hinge pins are worn....all of these items play a huge role in how long a door handle lasts....plus lube up your door seals to help keep them from freezing/ sticking. get in the habit of lightly pulling at the top of the door if its slightly frozen, not just pulling on the door handle itself. a properly adjusted door will ''pop'' open when you lift the handle.... BUT THAT BEING SAID.... I always have new ones in stock, inner and outer, just in case....the plastic is flimsy, and gets weak/ brittle over time. 89-94 front outers the same, 2 different styles for the inside depending on door panels. would need some for our 4-door members rear doors as well.... carry an ice pack in summer, I could see these getting really hot to the touch.....and gloves, or rubbing alcohol for winter , so you can get your moist frozen fingers off of them BUT they would be a neat ''one of a kind'' addition to any metro out there, be it they are mirror polished, or painted to match body color my 89 gti still has the factory white handles

I adjusted my front door handles so there was no play in the rod. Basically once you start pulling the handle, you are starting to open the door. Does this sound like a good idea? I was thinking that the handles could come in black like some sort of dip like they do for guns, as well as other colors. Powdercoating and such would be another option. 7071 T6 aluminum will be the alloy of choice unless he thinks another alloy might be better. How about some type of stainless steel? Conor |

stainless instead of aluminum would double, maybe triple the machining time as well as use up machine cutters. This would add around 60% to the costs. |

OK, I know the guy who mentioned this to me specializes in machining surgical-grade stainless steel so this is why I thought of that. I figured the costs would be higher but it sounds like this might not be a good idea overall and that the Al will be more than adequate. I will ask him if the coatings are something he can do or not. I was about to ask if that was the case, I have a 4-door and at least one of the handles is broken, I thought they used a different handle than the 2-doors, but I wasn't positive. |
