that is what I was thinking.. or anodize them any color of the rainbow and/or make them like the "maglight flashlight knurlednut crosshatching" scheme. remember these? http://www.123rf.com/photo_16650422_car-door--retro-with-push-button-handle.html what material were these chrome plated thumb wranglers made of? Edit: just chrome plated black iron steel? end edit: but yeah Tx summer heat metal might leave a mark ..haha there really are not a lot of durable materials that stand the test of time when left to exposure to the elements. I had my door adjusted like yours, so you could hardly lift the handle- but after I did that , I had issues unlocking the door I had to jiggle the lock and lift the door handle at the same time to get it to work.after a year of this, I took the door apart, tried cleaning/ lubing everything- no luck. so I adjusted the rod, 2 or 3 turns, then tried it. little more lift on the handle, and my lock works pefectly its all in the ''fine tuning''! |

Momma's car has over 6 years on hers and they still work fine. (Never shoulda typed that...they'll blow up tomorrow). I use silicone spray on the seals and try to keep everything jizzed up and swingin' like it should. Maybe helped that I told her to be easy on lil Penelope & don't be jerking around on em like she does me. But...I'd be interested in doing her 4 door if you make this happen. |

I talked to him today and he says that the approximate machining and materials cost would be about $100 per door, inside and out. He quoted me $400 for the 4 door handles I sent him on a 1992 4 door. Of course most of us only have 2 door handles to worry about. He said the costs would pretty much be the same no matter if aluminum or stainless was used. Does this cost seem too out of line? He also mentioned the possibility of us getting a 3D METAL printer. The ones that print in metal typically run $6000 from what he says. Of course if I were to do this, I would need to get a list of people who were interested enough to make this worthwhile. He thinks that over the long term this would probably be cheaper and plenty effective. I also brought up the possibility of polymer 3D printing and he indicated I would just have the same issues with the resultant product. They would be brittle and crappy just like the ones we have. There is also the possibility of just having the parts made that seem to break. The outer door handles seem to break up where it attaches to the opening rod. The inside ones are just crap. Both the handles and the mount that holds them are crap. I don't really think we can cut costs by enough to make that option worthwhile. Now there is also the idea that we could just keep replacing the same crappy handles each year and just live with it! Conor |

That leaves me out and I do not even need to see them. I really did not expect any of this to come to fruition anyway. Ideas like this come up pretty often but only a few ever pan out and it is usually because of cost. The underdrive pulleys and the vert top latches made it but I did not invest in any of those items myself. Lots of people did so good luck with your endeavors. Maybe it will pan out. As for the plastic door handle replacements you buy, if you find some oem handles they are better made than the aftermarket handles you find on ebay and other places. There is more plastic in important places and a little heavier made. They lasted for the most part a lot of years before they broke to start with when the car was new. 91ragtop sold some on the forum so I assume you can find them or could in the past anyway if you hunted hard enough for them. http://geometroforum.com/topic/5290523/1/?x=20#new |

Hmm... I swear I commented on this last night. Weird! Anyway, $100/door puts me out as well. That hurts too much... ![]() Can you talk him down to $50/door on a "bulk" price? Seriously though, awesome idea, but it's just a little too pricey.

Let's see.... $200 for a whole 2 door set that you would never have to tear apart your door every 2 to 3 yrs. ever? Hmmmm... count me in! Also have door handles that just a few Metro's have? Hmmmmm... count me in again! I'm ready! Otey |

My driver's door has a metal rod sticking out of it that PA Metro Frame Fixer invented, and when you push on the rod, the door opens (instead of lifting the handle)... Been like that for years; I'll see how much more use I can get out of it. I just baby the passenger door.

That's a bit higher than I would really want, but I think I'd be in for a set for my 2 door. Would have to think about it for the sedan. |

I am still in for a set, but I would think that the price can come down quite a bit if we have enough people here to do a bulk order. I have paid big for prototype parts, but when I buy in bulk, all of the sequential parts only cost a fraction of what the first one costs. |

Just thinking, cause I haven't had my door panels off yet and no problem with my babied handles, about shaving the door handles completely off, and going electric. Here is a DIY Instructable door shave And if you want a complete package kit Door opening kit |
