Window tint FINISHED!!!

Brandon:

No offence meant.

Previous owners tinted windows in 2 of my 3 Metros. In one of them, the tint on the rear hatch window is especially annoying: it blurs view through the inside rear mirror and colors everything purple. Rear window quarters on the same car have tint bubbles. Luckily there is no tint on door windows.

On the other car, the tint is optically OK, but it started crumbling due to age, which makes the car looking shabby.

Needless to say that removing tint is not a job for the faint of heart.

They probably did a cheap tint job. Really, I can't stand how bright other people's lights are in my rear window. I'm certainly getting the back of my car done. If you remove your's, you'll regret it at night! :P

Don't let a godawful tint job turn you off from tint altogether. What you had was dye-based tint, the cheap crap you can buy at Autozone or pay Billy-Bob $80 to install at the local chop shop body shop. It bubbles, it peels, it blurs, it turns purple. There is an easy way to remove it, though, involving a black trash bag, window cleaner, and the sun.

Real tint will cost much more, but it won't do any of those things. My family's '97 Caravan had tint from the dealer when it was new. It must have been the good stuff, because 18 years later, the windows are still as dark, clear, and colorless as the day we bought the van.

I have changed my dealer and going to someone who does LLUMAR tint which compares with 3m... I am also going to do the whole windshield instead of a strip, can't decide if I want to go darker than 50% on the windshield or not, I know I do want to do 15% on the sides and back windows or that is what is getting put on. it will be done on Monday now... $140 for Windows and $100 for windshield, I am going to try to get it all done for 220 by talking to the owner. looking forward to it.
Wow, hope you won't be doing any night driving... Tinting the entire windshield is like tinting your light housings... :stoner

I can see getting polarized windshield glass and doing the top strip. I guess I'm that guy who will always fall in the form < function category. :whistle

I had a few people post pics of their windshield 35% and 50% inside and outside view... I like 35% because it blends and it doesn't seem to be to bad to see out, looks pretty clear to me

On a windshield you typically want something higher than 90% transmission of light. Cheap glass tends to be the most 'coloured' and you'll notice a difference in brightness.

I drove and was driven around in a Lumina with polarized glass, it's about the darkest I'd go.

If you're going to do it, just remember at night there's a lot less light, and in the countryside there is even less, and it might make the difference between seeing that guy or gal walking down the highway or the deer in the ditch and not.

It's why I think shops that push HID retrofits into standard halogen housings to people , should be criminally and legally liable. :D

ZXT, what percentage is your tint? I think that would be a pretty good basis to go off of, with the picture right in your signature there. Is any tint UV blocking to save the interior? I'm sure that would be a lot more useful down there than up here, however.

Make sure to read the local laws so you don't get pulled over and fined. Looks like you're good with 35% all the way around, except for the windshield. Windshield tint is only allowed for the top 5" or so. Might want to check that out before you get pulled over, fined, and forced to remove the windshield tint.

On the same topic, without thread-jacking, I think a good addition to this conversation would be how tint laws carry into other states when you are passing though. Tint laws are fairly relaxed in Ohio, with 70% on the windshield, 50% on the front side, and no restrictions on side mirrors or rear windows.

However, I drive into PA every day, and PA state is much more strict with nothing on the windshield, only 70% on all other windows, and they also require a side mirror if the rear windshield is tinted, which I do not have on my XFi.

Do these laws apply to the state to which the vehicle is registered (hopefully), or will PA cops fine you for not following strict PA tint regulations? It is probably one of those things that varies between the cop that pulls you over.
