So here is one of our local Pick n Pulls during all the rain last month...![]() I know the store and main buildings are ok because they are on top of one of the most evil hills you could put at the exit of a pull it yourself junkyard. They are having a 75% off sale with no warranty... |

Even if an ecu is submerged in water, take it apart spray it down with alchohol, and blow it off. It would still function aslong as it has no external power going when it was submerged. |

That is true about the ECU. If you get to it SOON after the water goes down and there was no battery or the battery was completely dead, it is probably fine. I have washed several laptop motherboards that weren't powered on after an entire soda was spilled down through the unit and have been able to save several. I have been using one as my personal media PCs as I wouldn't trust reselling it to a customer. IT has been running reliably without a hitch for over a year now. Here is what I do. 1. Remove all onboard batteries and fans as well as the RAM and processor. Anything that can be removed comes off. This may involve re-gooping heatsinks and such with thermal paste but that is just part of the deal. 2. SOAK the motherboard in tap water with some dish soap for a while to remove any dried/hardened residues from soda and such. This also helps remove cigarette tar residue which can be quite nasty on computer components. I usually let it sit like this in a pan of soapy water for a while. 3. WASH the board again in soapy water and tap water. I then RINSE the board very well to remove all signs of the dish soap. 4. I then go straight to a pan of distilled water and let it set in that for several minutes. I then remove from that pan and give it a little more of a rinse with distilled water. 5. I then repeat a soaking in some 91% rubbing alcohol. I let this set for a few more minutes and then remove. 6. I then set the oven to the lowest setting possible and bake it for an hour or so. I usually put some cardboard under it to make sure it isn't getting direct heat. I watched this carefully to make sure it wouldn't catch fire the first time but never had an issue. 7. Remove the board from the oven and preheat it the rest of the way up to pizza baking temp. Bake a pizza in celebration of reviving a dead board. 8. I have also used a space heater blowing on them for odd shaped or large sized electronics. Yes, this works and my GF has seen it. She once asked me "When are we going to eat?" when we were planning on having pizza. My comment was "I want a few more minutes to finish baking the laptop motherboard in the oven and then we can do the pizza." She just looked at me like what???? As for that pick and pull, any of the engines/transmissions there will likely be filled with water. Again, these can be saved if you get to them VERY QUICKLY but odds are they will end up getting all rusted up and scrapped. Are there any Geos in this location? Conor |

if they bought them for the price of scrap and sold one part of each they could probably still make a profit.

As MMM said, if the flood was last month, likely all of the engines/transmissions are rusted out and scrap now. |

Yep, it was around the 10th or 11th, so the engines etc are going to be paper weights or full machined rebuild candidates. All fluids and batteries are removed so ECU's should be fine. I don't think anyone is going to want any interior parts though. Scrap is WAY down right now with the economy in China. It may very well cost them more to get rid of cars that don't sell than the metal is worth. Scrapyards around here are still collecting steel but not selling it themselves. I am worried you won't be able to give it away once they run out of space. Conor |
