If I won, I would be shipping my metro down to EVMETRO for a month or two.
Then I would start attending all these "meets" that I hear about from you lower 48 guys......
NO, you have that all wrong!!

If you win, you have to have your own meet, and pay all of us to come to Alaska!! :evillol :evillol

The clerk where I turned in my $4 winning ticket for two more tickets was so sick of lottery tickets. I guess they have been SWAMPED!

Conor
I can relate, yesterday was the busiest I've seen the gas station in the year and a half I've been there...SWAMPED is and understatement. :banghead Also had plenty of people asking me if I bought my ticket yet...One of you needs to win already :lol

Well I understand statistics perfectly well. I know that picking the same number such as 1-1-1-1-1 and 1 has the same odds as any other number.

The deal with the bias is that many people pick dates which limits the number to basically 31. So you use your birthday and half the numbers are not even in consideration since the top number is 69.

If you buy MULTIPLE tickets, then the quick pick becomes even more of an advantage. Each different combination is another 1/292million chance of winning.

Conor
But has the lottery ever been a string of one's? Highly, highly doubt it! :lol By guessing random higher numbers, you at least have more of a chance. I don't believe that the computer draws numbers better. Every time I get a computer pick number, it sucks! Usually several numbers in a row, like 3-11-13-14-21 or something stupid like that with low chances. The top number in the Cash-5 is 39.

It should be a mix of even, odd, and well-spaced numbers across the board; like 4-17-20-29-36. If you read into old lottery drawings online, it's best to pick numbers that haven't drawn in the longest time, because they always surface soon. I used to have a whole system, but I haven't played much lately. I usually won at least something stupid like a dollar that paid off my ticket, but never anything big. I'd always play the Cash-5, with only a $100k jackpot, but way, way higher odds than the Powerball.

One way to increase your odds in the lottery is to let the computer pick. Humans typically have a bias that eliminates certain ranges of numbers.
Not true! No offense but, you know absolutely nothing about statistics and the laws of probability.

The sole reason that approx. 70% of all lottery jackpots are won by computer generated numbers and not people picking their own set of numbers, is simply because 70% of all lottery tickets sold are computer generated and not individually chosen.
:gp

Every possible number combination has the exact same chance. Incidently, 1,1,1,1,1,1 which has been mentioned, is not a possible number combination, numbers can not repeat. It's a big bucket with one ball of each number. Once that number is picked, it's no longer in the bucket to picked a second time.

As for playing the lottery, yes, my GF and I have been playing the same 2 sets of numbers, every draw, for the past 12 yrs. And we ain't won :shit . While all sets of number have exactly the same odds of being drawn, the way I see it, though it could take thousands of years for our set of numbers to come up, statistically speaking, our odds get a tiny-tiny bit better, with each successive draw.
Oooops, there you go falling into a popular myth hole yourself. The number that is picked today has the exact same chance of coming up tomorrow. Although it's intuitive to think that it just won and is less likely to win again for a while, that's not the case, it's a fresh start every draw.

Gotcha! I didn't know that numbers can't repeat either. I thought each number came from a separate hopper but again I don't play a lot of lottery games myself.

A correction is that mathematically, the numbers 1-2-3-4-5 and 6 are just as likely to be picked as some other random combination. So there is a 1/292million chance of that being picked as well as your favorite numbers or a quick pick.

Now I have seen articles with tips that if you play the lottery a lot, your do have better odds by picking a set of "lucky numbers". Eventually odds are it will hit those numbers. This may not be in your lifetime but it might happen.

Also, if you want better odds and don't care about winning a ton of money, the smaller games are the best option. The odds are MUCH higher that you will win. Of course $50,000 isn't as sexy as $1.3 billion but the chances make these smaller games a better buy if you ask me.

This is an interesting article. In theory someone could buy this jackpot by getting all combinations but would be easier said than done in practice.

I was at the gas station today getting gas and they seemed to be selling more lottery tickets than ever! I asked the clerk what he thought and he said he would be happy once this was over.

I talked this over with the GF and we both agree that playing a game with higher odds but a smaller payout is the way to go.
