Locked Myself Out Of My Metro Again; Engine Running...

So I decided to stop at a closed gas station on my way home from work to clean the filth off of my windshield so I can see. It's pretty dark, so I jump out, clean if off with the squeege, and... I locked the door from instinct, with the keys in the ignition. I'm in a thin sweatshirt, and the car is running, heater full blast, 30 min. from home. :banghead

I attempted to wave someone down; no luck. I pried at it for a while and shook the driver's window, no luck. The driver's window has a couple of missing teeth near the top, so it doesn't stay up well. Except for tonight. :lol Ready to smash the window with a brick (I have another driver's window at home), I eventually dismantled the gas station's plastic firewood for sale sign by the road (election campaign style) and bent the metal up to pry the window down. Oops... I should find them another metal sign frame. :lol I was able to click the lock out, nearly completely frozen in the dark.

Any who, does anyone else do this? I have 4 keys to the car, yet I do this way too frequently. Does anyone have a suggestion for mounting a key under the car somewhere so I'm not screwed next time? It's a good thing for everyone to think about, because it's no fun in the winter! :P

I did it in an Oldsmobile diesel once, about thirty years ago. Oh great, this will sit here and idle for about a week B-)

It was in front of a 7-11 in a small shopping center, so I had help from passers by. Except for the cloud of stench we had to work in which was building up around the car, it was relatively painless. The tailgate of the station wagon had a frameless window, so two people gently pried the top of the window open while I reached in with my octopus-like arm and popped the inside handle.

Putting a spare key in your wallet is a good idea. The car came with a key/credit card for this exact purpose. Good luck finding one of those 25 years down the road.

First, dont leave your car running while your not in it. Second, never leave anything in the car making it necessary to lock, third never lock your car, lastly fourth if you do lock your car to get out while it is running I always roll the window down just a tad so I can get it unlocked. That being said, just drill you a couple of small holes on the inside of the fender or bumper cover and using a piece of wire or plastic tie wire you up a hidden extra key. Some where under the rear bottom of the car would probably work fine and no drilling required. Trust me, noone is going to be looking around your fenders or bumpers for a key to your car.

Turbo3 and Twincam Tweaker

they make little steel boxes that have magnets on them just for the purpose of secreting a spare key inside a fender.

they market them as "hide-a-key." ;)

Key in wallet. Or, as has been suggested, use a Hide-A-Key box. I have one on my old Ford truck.

My Mirage has a passive electronic key which allows me to remove the key from inside the vehicle with the car running. But the car will beep eight times when I do this, just as a reminder. I cannot lock the key in the car...the locks will quickly unlock themselves if the key is detected in the vehicle.

At one time, I had no less than five keys in my wallet. But carrying a thick wallet began to hurt my back, as it throws the alignment of my hips off when I sit down. I began just carrying a thin passcase with my driver's license and CPL in it, which left no room for spare keys. That is when I started using the magnetic boxes.

I put a spare key in my wallet.
I usually do this as well, but haven't made a spare for my Geo yet. Thanks for the reminder.

Not much metal on a metro unfortunately for a magnet to stick too.

jack of all trades, master of two

under the hood, beside front motor mount- lots of steel there.

I added my keyless entry just for this reason. I take the fob off the key anytime I leave the car running. It works great...

on top of the radiator support bar also works pretty well. Not easily visible and you can reach in there from underneath without having to completely crawl underneath.

Awesome guys! I might consider one of those boxes, but in the mean time, I'm going to just put one (of the 4) keys in my wallet. I can't believe I didn't think of that one... :smackface :lol

I've got one of those white cards, but the key is missing. Kinda wondered what it was exactly...

I carry a spare key in my wallet. Unfortunately, last week, I had to move my project car, so I had to unlock the steering. I was fully intending on getting the keys out after rolling up the window, but as tired as I was, I tried doing it in the wrong order...

Had to wake the wife up to let me in to get the spare key at 5 am. Sigh.
