Well about to go buy a 07 Yamaha R6s because it is a deal that I simply cannot pass up. so has anyone on here owned a sport bike? I know a lot of the dangers that goes along with it and how easily u can be stupid on one. good idea to get or not really? lol I have rode sport bikes before just dirt bikes when I was alittle younger, been a few years so, I am guessing it isn't a whole whole lot different. feel free to speak your mind on how you feel about bikes and such, I am just more of a ninja, gsxr, and r series bike person

All the old people around here, half blind and deaf and terrible drivers, make it dangerous to ride a motorcycle. Meaning you have to worry about other drives as much or more then about your own riding. Ride like an idiot, and you'll be dead in short order.

I had a Gsxr1100 years ago. Loved it. The Gsxr did get me a lot of attention and two steel pins, plates, screws and lost of surgery. But it was not my fault or the bikes it was a person not paying attention to a stop sign. I still own a bike to day but drive very defensive. Good luck and be careful.

Haha! Me too. I had an '87. It was a beautiful, beautiful bike. When I rode it, my brain was like "YeeeeeHaaaw". I've got some road rash scars from totalling mine. I kept riding afterwards too.

Brandon, I don't have any specific advice beyond be careful. If you find yourself taking stupid chances like I did, go to a track day or do some actual road racing. Actually going out on a track and riding as hard as I could cured me of stupid street riding. Canyon riding as fast as I could paled in comparison to road racing.

I have a '07 CBR1000RR. Love it. Too much fun! I've been cautious and lucky so far. Keep your head on a swivel and expect everyone to try and kill you, every ride. If you survive you probably had a good ride and had lots of fun. If you expect people to do stupid things like pulling out in front of you and plan a way out.... when it happens you are better prepared.
Don't skimp on the safety gear. Helmet, Jacket with pads, and all the rest. Wear it every ride!

A girl my wife works with just got away with doing 70 in a 35 zone while drunk. I think that's more dangerous than the old people who aren't looking.

I would highly suggest not riding a sport bike anywhere you are not familiar with. I would keep plenty of following distance and stay away from blind spots. Get some good gear. It is never a question of if you will crash, but when.

I owned a KZ1000 back in '91. I personally knew 2 people that died on their motorcycles. In 1992 I had a small crash in SF and promptly sold the bike. I think for people like me, you have to get it out of your system. It is not a serious means of transportation(IMHO). Yes, get a good helmet, gloves jacket with spine protector, hopefully pants, and definitely riding boots. When you get burned out on putting all that shit on every time, go find an old Swift GT, sell the bike, and read a bunch of T3Ragtop posts. Hopefully, you will experience some joy before you sell it or are seriously injured. Sorry for the pessimism. I want you to live.

About 2 months ago a kid my wife works with pulled out at a stop sign too far (or ran it, no one knows) and hit a motorcycle perpendicularly. It immediately killed the guy. Don't think for a second that you have to be going fast to die on a bike. The guy was doing everything right, but someone else's mistake killed him.

I have a small bike that I ride sometimes. But I wouldn't suggest it for everyone or all the time.

Plan on dropping a significant amount of $$$ on protective gear, ride like your life depends on it (it does) and go enjoy the ride!

yeh I have a helmet and gloves around $700 in them, just don't have a suit or boots figured I'd just bundle up really good... not planning on going on main roads with it anyways just barely gonna try to learn and only do small back roads around 30 mph or 40.. still enough to kill me I know but I will try to be super safe

It's too easy to die on a bike for me to want one. I have an urge to buy one about every 6 months that I have to quell.
