sphen, the particular phenomenon you are describing is a product of the vapor pressure point, commonly referred to as the dew point, and air temperature. moisture condensing on the outside of a beer can in the summer is pretty much the same thing.

Scary stuff when you are going down the hiway, or city street for that matter, and you're instantly unable to see anything, wipers do nothing and defrost is way to slow. |

Metro Block Heater. Mine is 1000 watts and takes maybe 10-15 min. to get coolant warm. Yours may vary.

Sphenicie, what you describe does seem like what happened but I'm pretty sure this wasn't lake effect fog, Sussex WI is 15 miles inland. You're correct, ahh, I feel like I started a war . It's about impatience, not the gas or money. The guino keeps track of how much gas is burned idling so it would be pretty easy to subtract it out of my "driving" mileage. 10-15 minutes is just too long to sit there, and I don't trust my neighborhood enough to leave my keys in it running and walk away.Daox and Bad Bent, Thanks for the suggestion, a Kats 1kW circulating heater will be added my project list. |

As far as the "taking care of the engine" part, the oil pan heater is much more important than the coolant heater. Don't get me wrong, the circulating heater is the best and will do wonders for getting quicker/better heat and defrost, but it will not warm the oil as much, and the oil temperature/viscosity is the biggest factor as far as cold start wear. Install a good coolant heater and a small oil pan heater and you will have the best of both worlds. |

So then the oil heater, like this http://www.amazon.com/Kats-24150-Watt-Universal-Heater/dp/B000I8TQD6? |

Just like that. Just keep in mind you have precious little "flat" surface area to work with on the bottom of the oil pan. A slightly physically smaller one (that I don't believe Kat's makes?) would make the install easier. At 32F, an hour of one of those little hummers heating 5W- oil will lower the viscosity by a factor of roughly 20x. Much more than that when the outside/oil temperature is colder. Edited by myredvert, Jan 21 2016, 03:53 PM.

I have the same fear at work, so I lock it while it idles, and keep 3 of my 4 keys on me. One in the car, one on the key ring, and one in my wallet. No more getting locked out of my car for me!
