Opening them up wide and turning off the heat will get rid of the temp difference he's complaining about!

60 degrees inside, -17 outside, for a difference of 77 Stat is set for 66 but the poor thin walls of this house are giving up a lot of heat. Fired up an electric space heater over by the back door to help out

Yes, this is the coldest day of the year so far here. I figure I will let the engines idle 30 seconds to a minute before taking off, then take it easy until the temp comes up to normal. I have read that extended idling isn't really helping anything and that it is better to drive the car easy for a while. Something else I noticed about the Metro is it takes FOREVER to come up to temp when really cold out. I would have thought the thermostat was stuck open but it finally got up to normal. My S-10 with the 4.3L has a cast iron block and heads. It takes a while to warm up when compared to the Metro but I am always amazed to come out like 2 hours after it was last run and see it still somewhat warm. The Geo cools off in like 5 minutes! I let mine idle for around 5 minutes every time. If for nothing else, it at least makes it more comfortable to drive in it.

I see. You are at least farther to the north of me so likely much colder as a rule. One of the issues I have heard about letting them run cold like that is that the engine won't be warmed up so it will be pouring a lot more gas into the engine until it is warmed up and in closed loop. This leads to more fuel in the oil contamination and pollution from it just sitting there running. They say letting it run for 30 seconds to a minute is really all that is required for MOST locations/temps and then to drive it easy. I guess it warms up faster being driven than just sitting. I doubt 5 minutes is too bad but there are people who let them run 30 minutes or longer. I would be more inclined to follow a severe service schedule for the oil changes. Conor |

When I woke up this morning, it was 88 degree in my bedroom and -4 outside. 92 degree difference. I live in an upper duplex with radiators and we aren't supposed to be able to set the heat over 75 degrees, but I don't think I have much control over that. When it gets really cold outside, it gets really hot in here. Luckily heat is included in my rent.

Wow! I'd be dead... like; totally dead... If I survived, I'd be running outside in pajamas so I could breathe! I can't stand anything over 70. If it were me alone, I'd keep it at 65 daytime, and I'd probably bump it down to 60 at night. Sounds like you need to implement the good old "double-hung" thermostat... That's what they used to do on the upper floors of city apartment buildings back in the day. They were usually heated by monster steam boilers, and there were no temperature controls, so the upper floors would hit into the 90's on cold winter days; so you would frequently see the top floor windows open in January. I'm sure it is still this way on some old city apartment buildings.

Whoa... What are all these old timey temperature measurements... Yesterday it was -28 or -29C outside, and +20C inside. Yeah, it was -40 with a windchill, and -40 carries between both measures. ![]() If I wanted to be a real standardized modern nazi... I'd be reporting in Kelvin.
