I had a strange noise when starting the Metro in the extreme cold for a few seconds after starting. This happened on the last couple days on the first start and then was never an issue. The noise sounded like a worn or dry bearing in a small electric motor, like a buzzing sound. The engine fired right up but I heard this sound several times on and off for 10 seconds or so, then it was fine. I let it idle a few minutes before driving just to be sure after hearing this sound. I wondered if maybe it was the distributor. I know cold starts are never good but this sound has me somewhat concerned. There really aren't any electric motors that would kick on when first started. What could this be? Conor |

sometimes in cold weather, fluttering relay contacts can sound like a buzzy electric motor. |

Was your heater blower motor on? That bearing tends to get loud on cold mornings in older vehicals. Also cam shafts bearings can make a dull squeal in the cold because the thick sludge (oil) pumps slow in the cold. |

![]() I have the same issue, and I traced it right to my blower fan. I doubt there is a way to oil it, and if it's squealing, the bearing is too far gone now. It's fine as long as air keeps coming out.

No, it wasn't the blower mower as it was off. This isn't like a normal high pitched bearing squeal. It is more like a vibration you hear in some electric motors when the bearings are worn or dry. Conor |

Around here we might get a temp swing of 10 degrees between daytime and nighttime. Mostly says in the 40's. I keep the home at 68 during the day so its not too bad. Pretty mild here. |

Not at those temperatures. Radiators doesn't start ice up until last below -50......usually need with different chill while driving too. .......unless, water/coolant mix is way off. |

its nice here in Arizona, was out in the shop pounding to get wheel bearings out, front door is open so the fresh air can come through the house, currently I think its hotter outside than in the house. |

No, I usually mix my coolant a tad on the rich side, like 60/40. I really think it is the cam journals. I don't know if it is a problem or because I have some 5W40 synthetic mixed in with the oil and maybe that is too thick??? Either way, if I start the engine and let it roll in gear as soon as a hear the sound, this drops the RPMs and the noise goes away. I figure this is probably easier on it than letting is buzz like that. Conor |
