A sad year for my Metros

2015 was a sad year for both of my Metros.

In the spring I decided to park my (92) convertible. The front springs broke. Between that and other rust issues I decided to park the car until such time as I have a garage in which to rebuild it. Sad, but necessary if I want it to be salvageable when I do get around to working on it.

The garage didn't get built over the summer. Maybe this year. Hopefully. Then next winter I can get into the task.

As for my 98, it continues to run - and stop - and do all the things I've ever asked of it since I bought it new. Eighteen years of driving bliss. But living outside in an Alaskan rain forest is hard on a car. There are water leaks now, several of them, and more soon to start if the rust is any indication. Brackets are falling off too, metal that used to be stout and strong but now is weak and wobbly, so I have been increasingly relying on baling wire and other such tricks to keep things like mufflers and brake lines from dragging on the ground. The idle is going up and down too (EGR system most likely), but I've been afraid to deal with it since every other nut or bolt I've touched over the last few years has either been hopelessly rusted in place or breaks off as soon as I take a wrench to it.

That's the real tragedy of a loved car that runs forever: the owner has to watch helplessly as it slowly disintegrates back into the ground from which its components came.

And now there's a 2008 Yaris sitting beside it. Bought it cheap. A nice little car, but a gas-guzzler compared to the Metro (what isn't?). And my 98, since it is running well (EGR notwithstanding), might still fetch a decent price and provide a new owner a decent ride for a few more years. It makes me very sad, but there it is.

And no forum members anywhere nearby to snap it up.

Come on down to NorCal I have a few Metro chassis that are rust free project cars that need a loving home. I have a 93 and a 95.

All is not lost!

Still have the '98. Yesterday I took the Yaris to Toyota to have some recalls done (and they couldn't get it done before closing) so I drove the Metro last night. It was like returning to the loving arms of a long-lost girlfriend! Drove easy (I hate the hydraulic clutch on the Yaris!), handled responsively (no power steering to inhibit road feel), and the tank is still full (my first tank in the Yaris delivered 39mpg: great for a Yaris but poor for a Metro).

So I'm gonna keep it. The garage will be up this summer so I'll have a proper place to work on it. And I've got two kids who will be wanting to drive soon - if they're gonna wreck a car, they could wreck the Yaris and I won't be heartbroken.

In the meanwhile, I'll drive the Yaris and save the Metro for snowy days (I didn't put the snow tires on the Yaris yet, as it's been a warm winter in Alaska).
