Fastest Hampster EVER

So the wife and I were watching Foxnews this morning and she sees an Elio commercial. I missed it because I was perusing GMF, of course. I went to Youtube and looked at this commerical and asked her if this is what she saw. She says, yes, so I just now wanted to show you guys that the concept of an 84 mpg three banger is for real. Really, really, real.

Let the debate begin. :P

That video is from June. They're showing it now because there are four days left until the end of their latest begging campaign.

As always I'd like to see them succeed, but with gas selling for $1.73 right up the street from me, I can't help but think that their chances are less then they were two years ago.

I have heard that automakers are petitioning the Feds to change the definition of 'motorcycle' to include the Elio so a person would have to have an endorsement to ride/drive one.

Something tells me that the further this fellow gets along, the more likely it is that he will be "Preston Tucker'd" by the Feds and the Big Three.

I own a Freeway HMV, you can check it out on YouTube (Fred's Freeway). In orange. One seater, 100 miles to the US gallon. It's a toy really, although in summer I do get my groceries in it.
The internet "owner's club" of the Freeway HMV do not believe in general that the Elio will see the light of day in showrooms.
Too good to be true? Probably. But I still have a spark of hope that it will be built and available in Canada.

I'd go for that, or a corbin sparrow, or whatever, for my daily commute. But they aren't legal here. Go figure. the T-Rex is, but of course, it's registered as a motorcycle. Our road law makers are a bunch of :shit heads.

Since the whole idea of Elio using a 3-wheeler was to circumvent the existing safety and emissions laws for automobiles, I'm not surprised (and see no special conspiracy) that the government is enforcing the existing motorcycle safety laws. This was always the unspoken spectre haunting Elios plans. The HMV Freeway in the '70-'80s was actually built and sold (700 units) and it was sold as a motorcycle. Helmet laws were more liberal in those days - California especially didn't have one.

If you want to drive Elios, either wear a helmet or lobby to get the helmet laws changed.

:gp As punkozuna said, no conspiracy required. Legally, the Elio has always been (in the majority of states) a motorcycle.
And of the dozen and a half or so of the states that require helmets, just under half of those have exemptions for enclosed cab motorcycles, which leaves roughly a dozen states where a helmet is currently still required even in an enclosed cab. Nothing has changed here except that over the past several years more states have been adding the "enclosed cab" definition to their motor vehicle laws and some of those adding the helmet exemption for them.

The helmet issue is NOT what the latest NHTSA concern is about. Elio's intentional avoidance of the "M" word in its marketing has always been painfully obvious. In my opinion they have always wanted to have their cake and eat it too in this regard by constantly proclaiming that it has been designed to meet the safety requirements for a car, but without making clear that the vehicle isn't (and likely won't be) actually tested and proven to meet those standards. People tend to get drunk on the koolaid and remember official sounding words like "5 star crash rating" while overlooking the fact that the words "designed to meet" are not the same as "meets..."

Which may very well have contributed to them getting their cake shoved down their own throats because it appears that the NHTSA has become concerned that from a perceived safety standpoint, manufacturer's like Elio have become such good illusionists that people won't/can't/aren't seeing through the smoke and mirrors when it comes to the actual safety of an enclosed cab three wheeled motorcycle.
NHTSA Proposal

DOT/NHTSA RIN: 2127-AL15 Publication ID: Fall 2015
Title: Amend Definition of 3-Wheeled Vehicles

Abstract:

This rulemaking would change the regulatory definition of motorcycle to exclude three-wheeled vehicles that are configured like passenger cars. Under the existing regulatory definition of motorcycle in part 571.3, three-wheeled motor vehicles are classified as motorcycles. This is appropriate for motorcycles with sidecars, trikes, and other three-wheeled vehicles that are based on a motorcycle-like configuration. However, other three-wheeled vehicles have passenger-car characteristics such as fully enclosed cabins, hinged doors with roll-up windows, steering wheels, and side-by-side seating. Because these car-like vehicles ride on three wheels instead of four, they are not required to meet federal safety standards for passenger cars (although they are subject to motorcycle safety standards.) Various car-like three-wheeled vehicle models have been imported into the U.S. and have been available for sale to the public.

NHTSA believes consumers who purchase these vehicles are likely to assume that these vehicles have the same safety features and crash protection as passenger cars certified to Federal safety standards.

Wrecking one of these cars will not be a problem. With they way they've laid them out and designed the chassis along with the rest of the car, I don't see how anything could go wrong with them. Something about the car having to be real to be wrecked comes to mind...

Elio Latest News

Last night in Mr. E's dreams, he produced a car that was sold to the public. In a horrific turn of events, the driver and their passenger were involved in a multi car pile-up on the highway. The Elio was stopped behind a semi, and subsequently hit by another semi with an oversized load pulling 8 trailers. Due to the exceptionally well engineered safety features of the Elio, even though the remains of the Elio were mangled and shortened to 2 feet in length, the two passengers (who were not wearing helmets) walked away without a scratch and immediately called the company to put down another deposit in order to receive their replacement Elio sometime before the year 2032.

Then Mr. E woke up and realized he hadn't yet produced or sold a single car yet.

Stay tuned for next months press release - "Elio - the safest vehicle on the highway. 10 years after its conception not a single injury accident has occurred in the entire consumer fleet..."

The updated version of the Geo is called the Mitsubishi Mirage and you can head down to a dealer and buy one today. I think Elio would be great but wouldn't hold out hope for them.

My GF just bought a Mirage and loves it. It is a 3 cylinder and seems way more responsive than a Metro because the torque curve is very broad.

Get the Mirage unless you can make do with something this big and are willing to wait for it and understand it may never happen.

One of the guys I work with is in line for one... I feel kind of bad because I told him about it well over a year ago and here we are still waiting for it. He now has a 1992 metro like mine (not as well taken care of though). I to hope it comes to market. Don't need it for my 3.2 miles to work but it is a cool design and we need something different!

Don't feel too bad, there are three years worth of people waiting ahead of him.
