Hello Geo fans, I have been reviewing what is available in the Stainless Steel Braided Brake hose department and see a set on Ebay for a reasonable price. Any thoughts on these?? Last time I bought some, they were cheaper then oem style rubber hoses...so, why not? Good way to get a whole set cheap to replace old, cracking hoses. |

oem rubber hoses have issues. brake pressure causes them to swell up every time you use the brakes. brake fluid gets contaminated by water and attacks the rubber. you need to repace rubber hoses every 2 or 3 years. the braided style hoses use a nitrile or nylon tube under a rubber coating and on top of that they have braided stainless steel covered with another coating of plastic. the biggest benefit of a good braided brake line is that acidified brake fluid doesn't attack the nitrile of nylon inner liner. also, the lines don't swell up with pressure like a rubber hose. that makes the brake feel much more responsive as far as sensory feedback and gives you way better control when you are right on the edge of locking the wheels up. that control is pretty much always the same, too, so that you can learn the limits of braking. i use good quality braided flexible brake pipes on all my cars when i upgrade brakes during a refit. however, the brakes on a base model metro using the hub over rotor design are so crappy that unless you move up to rotor over hub design brakes from a vert or later model that uses 13" wheels you won't get the full benefit of the better hoses. both my verts have been converted to gt calipers, rotors, and rear discs and i run the braided brake lines on both cars. you have to pay attention to what you are buying, too. there are some pretty cheap braided brake lines on the market. some of them are so poor in quality that they blow out the first time you hit the pedal. look for goodridge brake lines. in my opinion those are the best replacement hoses out there as far as quality vs. price. ![]() for your general metro hoopty, you can hang all new oem brakes on one for just a tick over 100 bucks including new rubber hoses. you might be just as far ahead to do that every couple of years if you aren't dealing with a "special" car.
