Toyota kills off Scion brand.; 2002-2016, RIP!

Today Toyota announced the death of Scion. It was launched in late 2002 as a brand of affordable cars for young hipsters. Unfortunately, I don't think any of what they sold was particularly hip, or particularly affordable when compared to a similar Toyota.

Toyota apparently agrees, and most current Scion models will transition to the Toyota brand.

Anyone have a Scion?

Most were ugly looking things. Tge Tc wasnt so bad, but thr box Xb was hideous. Only the Nissan Cube is uglier. The FRS is the only good car they had but its underpowered and too expensive.

Not only that, they eat up gas like nothing else. Inefficient engine.

Consolidation is the way to go. Olds, plymouth, Saturn, Geo, and a few others have been related to the ash bin of the car world. Soon others will be there also, namely ELIO!!

Agreed. They were odd looking things. Not 'hip', which is what they were shooting for, mostly just odd. And don't forget that many had really cool 1990s-tech engines and automatic transmissions. A coworker of mine had one and it blew it's engine at about 90k.

The Scion wasn't as cheap as it needed to be to sell well. It sold decently before 'The Crash', but Toyota failed to adapt it to the new economic realities of it's target audience. Scions START at about $18,000. One article I read pointed out that it would be difficult for the average working Millennial to afford one even if they lived at home.

Were they priced like the Mitsubishi Mirage or Chevy Spark...even if they had to be de-contented to accomplish it...they would have sold better. Who is going to pay $18,000+ for a car that looks like it was designed by a four-year-old and sporting a drivetrain from a two-generations-back Camry? Especially in this economy?

This was not a matter of if, but when...

Thank God Scion is gone. I am a pretty big Toyota fan and I'm excited to see a 'true' Toyota 86 come to the states! Hopefully we get the Limited Yellow Edition some time too. I mean, it is doubtful since Japan always gets the SiR, CTR and Integra Type R models that we don't get.

It looks like a budget Supra to me, which is definitely something that brings out my inner fanboy. I do think it will be better for the company. Consolidation isn't always a terrible idea. Well, unless you get rid of the Supra for the Celica. Fools! :D

I don't know how much of a 'true Toyota' it will be...since it's mostly a Subaru anyway...but Toyota will now be calling it the 'GT86'.

With any luck, the move to the higher marque will ensure that the car will also move up in performance since it is no longer tied to the Scion price point. A new baby Supra would be kinda cool! :thumb

Not so fast

It's been a long time coming. The tC was a big sales success, and the xB (for some reason I don't understand) and the FR-S were a big hit with enthusiasts, but every other thing they've tried hit the market with a dull thud. At least Toyota is getting the Matrix back (Scion iM).

I wouldn't call the FRS underpowered. It doesn't need to have gobs of power to be fun (cmon, we drive Metros for cryin out loud). However I'd definitely prefer they swap out the boxer for an I4...

A Metro isnt sold as a spirts or performance car, even though I drive mine like it is, lol. The FRS was sold and promoted to be this big deal of a sports car with great performance. Sure, it handles like it should but its nuetered for power. How many poeple live on tught curvy roads? 90% or more that own them probably live on flat ground with hardly any corners. Unless you live in San Francisco its all straight lines. It needs 50 more hp. If I had the money to affird one, for tge sane money Id buy a used Mustabg GT, Z28, Vette, even the older Z06 are getting down in price abd will kill the FRS in every category except back seat room, barely, lol.

I'm pretty sure that's not they had in mind with the FRS. I never once heard it was supposed to be a 0-60 competitor.

if you have ever driven a frs or brz on a track you would understand why they were built. if not then you have no idea. i have driven them on the track here in phx and they are so much fun. it does not have to he a HP monster for it to be fun. shit, even on the streets they are a blast. really drive one and you will understand. not tool around but actually drive one!!!

As someone who has actually owned a BRZ, I can confirm that this is 100% incorrect.

Not only are they not "neutered", they have more than enough power for a car of this type. They're high 14second cars, so by no means a drag car, but no slouch either. FWIW, that's on par with a 90s-00s Mustang GT.

I always thought Scions suffered from an identity crisis. the toaster cars were popular among the older crowd, quite the opposite of what was intended. SIL had two Xa's and wrecked them both quickly, she may not be the best driver but those cars were a little to easy to flip IMO.

I had a bone stock 90 LX with a 5.0 and a 5 speed. It was a high 13 sec car. Had less than 20k on it so still fresh then. Had a 98 Z28 1LE that ran low to mid 13's bone stock and still got 30 mpg. It was a 6 speed and the 1LE was the handling option and light weight also. It wouldbt keep uo in tight corners like a Miata or FRS but could beat the FRS otherwise for less money new. Dobt get me wrong, I love the FRS but it was overhyped and ended up short of power that was expected. Hopefully Subaru will fix that soon with a STi version.
