I hit the active topics for GMF a couple hours ago with my Samsung 5s phone, and got a pop up that my browser had 4 viruses. The pop up directed my to down load 360 Antivirus from Google play, and even after restarting my phone a few times, downloading that app was all I could do to get past that screen. I went ahead and downloaded it, and after I got my browser working again, I uninstalled the app. Everything seems to be working fine on it now, but the incident seemed suspicious. The pop up said that the viruses came from adult sites, but my phone has never been on any. I have never let anybody borrow my phone either, so I know for sure that it never has. I rarely surf on that phone since I have lots of tablets handy, so the total internet time is probably less than 5 hours since I got it. Anybody know if I have fallen for a scam or have made my personal info vulnerable by downloading the app?

Some of these types of deals are scams. I see them all the time. The thing is that this is an actual real AV for phones. Was it the REAL site though? I often see people who get redirected to a "fake" version of a real product and then install it. Then they are in a big mess. Personally I would download the trial version of Kaspersky for your phone. It will operate like the pay version for 30 days with no limitations before it expires. You can scan and clean your phone for 30 days and then remove it if you don't want to pay for it. It is a good product and the best in the industry if you ask me. It also routinely comes out at the top in industry testing. See http://www.pcworld.com/article/3025889/windows/tested-microsofts-windows-defender-antivirus-is-less-awful-than-it-used-to-be.html I have seen some really odd crap in my work. Plenty of Android phones get infected. Macs are also not immune so get protection if you use one. One of the oddest ones was a router virus. This guy kept getting redirects to crap on his computer as well as pop ups on his phone. I would look at it at my place and see none of this. I told him his router might have a virus as this is now something that can happen. This is very rare but can happen. Anyway, he called his internet provider and they told him no for like week. They said this was impossible. I worked on his computer and the phone company offered him a deal to swap phones for a newer model that extended his contract. Then the computer I worked on as well as the new phone started acting up. He called the phone company and mentioned that I told him about the possibility of a router virus. He contacted the internet service provider again and they kept telling him that NO this can't happen. He finally complained enough and they offered to swap routers. He did this and all the issues just went away like that. Apparently viruses can infect certain routers. http://www.pcworld.com/article/2880189/watch-out-for-malware-on-your-router.html I have heard certain smart TVs can also get infected but I have yet to have an experience with this yet. I run a "dumb" TV through a computer so the TV is safe while all the "smart" features are run through the computer. Conor |

Yes, it is a scam. I deal with this every day; day in, day out... I would not download any application that the pop up suggests, and certainly DON'T call any phone number that pops on the screen. If they sound like they are from India and just learned to speak English, hang up the phone immediately. I don't know about Android phones, but iPhones cannot be infected; just clear your browser's history in settings. Macs cannot be infected *by viruses* either, sorry Connor. There is absolutely no need for external virus protection on Mac computers; I have to help people uninstall Norton on Apple computers every day. Macs can, however, be infected by malware, which anti-virus programs can't seem to find. A free download of Malware Bytes (adwaremedic.com) will clean it up with no issue, and no need for bulky programs. Trust me, 15+ of the daily calls I take pertain to this exact issue.

Yes, Kaspersky is the way to go for virus protection. Plus they sponsor Ferrari, so you're doing your bit to support the right team. |

I would never download an app recommended by a pop up claiming I have a virus. That would be a way for the virus to gain extra permissions. I would have uninstalled the browser then reinstalled it. Or tried a factory reset. After exhausting other options I would have gone to the play store and downloaded an antivirus after doing some research. |

in my experience, any apple product with a virus/malware is junk and not worth trying to repair it. makes a large coaster or paperweight. |

Sounds like corporate speak fed to customer service reps... "No no, we don't get viruses, totally immune to those. Some spyware or malware, but only a few of those, those aren't viruses per se." |

It is possible the virus message was just an ad which might show up as a consequence of downloading any free app. If that was the case, then you did not have a virus. If the antivirus is legit you should be able to uninstall it. |
