EDIT: I went to go look at the car. 1400 you say? Well we get there, wait 30 minutes for the guy to show up, after waiting 30 minutes outside of town because he was running late. He's not there and I have to be let in the security gate (that leads up to a double wide trailer) by his wife. I drive up the driveway and holy shit if it's not a mother fucking used car lot. About 18 cars were up there. My heart sank. :banghead

I grit my teeth and go up to it. Absolutely not as nice as the pictures looks. In the pic i'd give it an easy 8/10. Reality was more like a 5/10 if I'm being nice. Key was in it so I went ahead and started. Oh wait, you thought it was going to start? HA! So the battery is dead. The 'sellers' didn't like that I said 'well it was in the 'by owner' section of CL so I didn't really expect it to be a dealer. More things were pointed out that was wrong and I said that i'll be leaving.

I don't know about the older ones, but my Aunt's mid 2000's Odyssey was garbage. It was constantly breaking down, issue after issue, until the transmission finally went. She had a model a few years prior to that with the same type of issues. I'd never go for a mini-van type thing regardless.

The 1995-1997 had the good transmission. The price ($1400) is about a thousand less than I can find anywhere else. I'm really trying not to love this thing, but van is it hard.

Not many guys need talking out of a minivan purchase. :lol

Passenger mirror's missing. No back seat?

The ad sounds like a curbstoner. Usually if it's a real owner, they say something about their experience with it.

That's all I got. $1,400's pretty darn cheap for a Honda. :dunno

The ad being simple is concerning, along with the guy's replies being a little untimely. I'll see.

He's probably working out deals on three other cars he bought at the auction last weekend. ^o)

Here's the link, MT. I just searched Birmingham's cragslist for Odysseys.

I like my 2005 Odyssey EXL. Lots of room, good power, great ride and decent mpg...25ish at 70mph. Just replace the active engine mounts and use ONLY Honda atf and it should last many miles.

The trans has already grenaded and been replaced once, it's got over 100k on it! I do think this was the day and age when the van came with a F series motor, the F22 if I recall correctly. Bullet proof engine found in tons of accords and such over the years. Even found in some JDM cars in the form of the F20B. They are great motors, just awful transmissions. A manual swap from a prelude or similar would be nice, but timely. That's the only way to make them dependable IMO.

I've heard the transmission thing a lot, but from what I have gathered the 95-97 trans were better. Any idea if there is any truth to that? Or how could I find out it was shit before I bought it, do they just slip or something?

No experience with odyessys, but can tell you after owning 2 preludes and 2 civics they are a fun car to drive but I d never own another Honda again. Always heard endless tales of reliability from them, yet all but 1 of mine spent more time in the shop than on the road, and that one was almost new. Same story for several friends that had them. Been sold on Suzukis and or Toyotas for a while now.
