test drive it and drive it like you stole it. trans will not slip under normal/slow driving. hammer the throttle and go through the gears to see if there is any slipping or no shifting. my old tacoma had a bad trans. showed no issues with normal driving. race it from a stoplight and it would hang up from 1st-2nd and then sometimes skip 3rd. normal driving, no issues at all.

The trans has already grenaded and been replaced once, it's got over 100k on it! I do think this was the day and age when the van came with a F series motor, the F22 if I recall correctly. Bullet proof engine found in tons of accords and such over the years. Even found in some JDM cars in the form of the F20B. They are great motors, just awful transmissions. A manual swap from a prelude or similar would be nice, but timely. That's the only way to make them dependable IMO.
I've heard the transmission thing a lot, but from what I have gathered the 95-97 trans were better. Any idea if there is any truth to that? Or how could I find out it was shit before I bought it, do they just slip or something?
From what I've read, it's to do with how the hondamatics work. Ie a clutch(or some such) for each gear. It should be fine with the earlier ones, as they appear to have 4 cylinder engines. The 98 up to whenever have the 3.5L V6...too much damned torque for those little clutches (or lockup solenoids or whatever they are).

In other words, assuming it's the 2.2/2.3 engine in it, you don't really have to worry about the transmission....any more then usual, anyway.

The ad being simple is concerning, along with the guy's replies being a little untimely. I'll see.
He's probably working out deals on three other cars he bought at the auction last weekend. ^o)

Here's the link, MT. I just searched Birmingham's cragslist for Odysseys.

Not so fast

I hate it when they do that. Just come out and say it. "I'm a dealer, and this car's a turd, but it's cheap. I really don't know anything about it, so no warranty, and the title's not in my name. Good luck!" :deal Save us all the trouble. :banghead

If there's no evidence of a license plate in the pictures, and they don't mention anything having to do with owning the car (even if it's something simple like, "it's always been reliable" or "it's too small, I need a truck"), I don't bother. Sorry it didn't work out for you.

Probably saved you a lot of money on repairs. Even in the newer midels with the V6, its still a common breakdown in the trans. If you want a minivan, the Sienna is decent and even a decently maintained mopar van is good, but they can have the known bad mopar trans. The thing about tge caravans is that there parts everywhere and cheap stuff, plus easy to work on.

WOW, I don't usually hear a lot of Honda reliability unhappiness...
I have a 2000 CIVIC LX 4 door with 240,000 miles, power windows are slow in winter and some panel lites are out. I would say all other costs were routine mtc or self induced.
I have two buddy's that had for a long time, and just sold, Honda Odysseys. One was a 97 I think and the other was a 05. They both loved them for there reliability, neither ever had an issues and both were over 100K on the clock.

I always liked the old Toyota Previa, never bought one though.

I was talking to a guy at a bar once. He was REALLY drunk and talking about how he had planned to sleep outside in his car. It was an older Mazda or Toyota minivan and he brought it just so he could lay down and sleep easier. He was talking about the van and said it was a 5 speed with 4 wheel drive. It was an old school 4WD with a transfer case and hi/low range which I thought was neato.

Maybe look for one of these. I don't remember what it was but I am pretty sure it was a Toyota or Mazda. Like most guys I am not a big follower of minivans but this sounded pretty neat.

I love minivans. The main thing that drew me to this car was the price... and it just wasn't worth it even at the low price listed.

Those older Odysseys are basically disposable nowadays. Just drive it until the transmission shits and scrap it. From what I understand, the transmissions in the older ones are 'better' than the later ones, but can't be called 'good'.

My brother had a '99, and it also had trouble with the coil packs going bad. It died last year of...a transmission failure.

Probably one of these.

My parents almost bought one of these when I was a kid, but my mom didn't like how far forward in the van she sat when driving it. "I want to HAVE a hood ornament, not BE a hood ornament."

Yes, she actually said that. We ended up getting a Dodge Colt Vista wagon. Also available with 4WD, but ours was 2WD.

:lol You knew better for that price. Would have been cool if it was super clean though.

I think I have told you about my bosses old Sienna that has over 330k on it and still gets hammered at 90+ MPH everyday. These days, you pretty much fill it up with oil and check the gas but still...

Edit: Over 350k and 100 MPH! :deal
