Funny, with gas prices, you'd expect them to bench such projects.

Well, we know the big 3 would, anyway. Good to see someone cares enough to continue improving these things.

What are the odds we would ever see it in the US, until maybe gas prices reach $10/gal and people stop buying cars... :dunno

We either have an aversion to advanced technology, or some folks in two cities that I wont name but the name starts with Detroit and Washington don't particularly love fuel efficient cars... :hmm

If poeple were wanting small, slower, fuel efficient cars they woukd sell a lot more than they have. Even when gas was over 4 bucks the number one seller was a Ford pickup. Even the Toyota Camry isnt cobsidered a fuel sipping car and its not small. Makers arent going to try selling cars here if they think it wont sell well. You cant force poeple to buy small gas sipping cars, the US hasnt gone full communist, yet. If Sanders gets in, all will feel the bern, lol. I didnt buy the Metro for gas mileage, its just a nice benefit. I got it because its cheap, easy to work on, and is actually fun to drive, plus keeps the miles off my Liberty, which is my "nice" car.

GM made the Saturn S series, very fuel efficient, but Saturn didn't last very long. I bought a 2000 Saturn SC1 last month for $950.00, did a tune up, CTS and intake manifold gasket. After that I took it for a drive averaging 53 mph, that means from 45 to 67 mph, for 180 miles and took 3.05 gals to fill it up. This was a run that I made to check if my previous run was correct, I averaged 65 mpg over a shorter distance. Oh yes, I did put my Honda Insight wheels with old RE92 lrr tires on it. I couldn't believe it and I'm still going to keep an eye on it to verify.

so they say the manifold is built into the head. imagine the day they can get 3d printing so high tech they can print an engine all moving parts inside and all. no need for bolts any more no need for head gaskets, could make some real complex stuff if it was all printed in 3d.

This doesn't match up with what is reported here: https://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/bymake/Saturn2000.shtml. Hm?

Tall 5th gear in those earlier saturns, great for highway MPGs. Plus the engine design/tuned for max fuel efficiency in the corresponding RPMs.

I was getting mid 30s MPGs in mine in my mixed driving /short trips. I'm just managing 40mpg with the same driving in my '95 Firefly.
