OK will check thermostat. I had assumed holding proper temp meant it was regulating (opening and closing) easy enough to test in a pot of water. I heard about problems in past threads getting a "good" thermostat ie problems with some third party stats. is there consensus on how or where to get the right thermostat for the car? (yes its the metro xfi no ac panel is their) |

Get a 'hot' one. The parts guy will probably hand you one that is around 180 degrees. That is too cool for these tiny motors. Get one that is about 192-195 degrees. It will have the same effect as a grille block and keep the engine at a higher operating temperature. Should make your heater hot as blazes, too! When a thermostat sticks open, it will do exactly what you are describing. Coolant isn't kept in the engine long enough to collect the heat it needs to make your heater work. And the constant supply of coolant that is too cool can prevent your car from coming out of 'warm up' mode, and you will waste gas. Coolant isn't circulated as fast at idle, so the coolant has a chance to collect heat. Plus, there is no airflow across the radiator cooling it further. But at normal operating speeds, the coolant moves through the engine too fast if the thermostat isn't doing it's job. Edited by Cobrajet25, Feb 16 2016, 03:19 AM.

If you are looking for the correct one for your engine, this one is it. More expensive but it is the correct temp (OEM part). http://www.ebay.com/itm/Delco-131-93-Thermostat-GM-OEM-91171047-AC-Delco-/322008182884?hash=item4af92ef064:g:Ya0AAOSwzgRWwFyz&vxp=mtr |

If you do opt to test it, rather than throwing money at a new one that it may not even need, be sure to tie a piece of string or wire around it, and suspend it in the hot water medium. The conductive & convective heat transfer, from allowing it sit on the bottom, would

Yikes! $18, for a, thermostat? That's not small potatoes. But if it gets you the heat you're looking for, it's totally worth it. It's hard to put a price on comfort. But if it was $20, fuggit, bundle up!

There probably won't really be much testing necessary. Chances are you will pull the thermostat out and it will be obviously jammed open. |

I agree. This is like a $10-12 part at most parts stores. There isn't much point in testing it. Once it is removed, you just replace it. Sure, this isn't like the end of the world to replace but is so cheap that it would be dumb not to if you have the housing apart. I also think it will be very obviously bad when taken apart as mine was. I had the same exact symptoms. This is like changing the timing belt without changing the water pump. For a $35 lifetime warranty one from Autozone, you would be dumb not to do this. Conor |

$18 is literally nothing to me compared to what the car has saved me I just want to avoid the issues I thought i remembered reading about regarding aftermaket thermostats. the testing is purely for curiosity since I Have not tried it before (boiling one) so what the hell will make a video of it. |

ok. finally got around to changing the thermostat. took about 3 minutes. holy shit. the damned thing was PHYSICALLY DAMAGED I mean actually "bent" the ONLY logical explanation is that it has always been bent since I got it. amazing. just amazing. when I told the mechanic he said people sometimes go in with a screw driver and "jam" them open instead of replacing thinking it will help. more flow and all that. I HAVE needed to radiator cover since purchase in the winter. sure explains it :-) |
