So it seems like the pre '95 hatchback Metros with an upgraded radio package had a total of 6 speakers, including the two up front, two by the rear seats, and two in the hatch. It seems like every hatch has holes for speakers, but the basic models had a solid plastic cover panel that covers the rear hatch speaker holes. My '94 XFi didn't have any radio or speakers to begin with, but the wiring for the front and back seat speakers was in it from the factory. A prior owner added the radio and 4 front and mid speakers. I salvaged the back speaker covers from a parts car, and my question is if anyone knows if the wiring for the rear hatch speakers exists in the car from the factory. If so, I'd love to add hatch speakers to get a better sound in the car, but if the wiring isn't there, It's not worth messing with. I could just yank the back panel off and check, but I'd have to buy new plastic push-in things, so I figured I would ask first. Are the hatch speakers 4 inch, or larger? Thanks guys! BTW, does anyone have any affordable recommended amps that I can attach to a factory head unit for better sound? Plug-and-play would be even better if possible. I could be wrong, but I think it was an LSi upgrade option. The XFi DEFINITELY wouldn't have any speakers (since it didn't have a radio) but they could have been wired. It's pretty simple to run the wiring yourself down the sides, under the carpet, and through the opening at the top of the hatch. You'll need a coat hanger or steel fish tape line to run it down. |

Hmm... not many big audio guys here. ![]() I don't know if I'll go through the trouble of wiring hatch speakers, but it will be a bit warmer tomorrow, so I think I'll peek under the cover after I change the oil tomorrow. |

I have a 92 4 door metro. The only place for mounting speakers in my car was the two up front and two in the trunk area. The speakers in the trunk area are like 4 feet apart and point directly at one another...this seems to defeat the purpose doesn't it? |

My 92 XFi has front and hatch speakers but no mid speakers. I'm pretty sure the hatch speakers were added by someone else because they were 10 ohm instead of 4 ohm. They were identical to the front 4 ohm speakers though. When I had the interior out last time I noticed that I had another set of speaker hookups along the back wall, not hooked to anything and too short to reach the middle speaker position. Not sure how the hatch speakers are hooked up but they use a stock connection, just don't know where it comes from. |

My 92 metro had the dash speakers and hatch speakers wired but my 93 has the dash and quarter panel speakers and no hatch speaker wiring. |

Long story short, it may or may not be there, the only way to know for sure is to pull the hatch panel and look. |

Hmm... forgot about this thread. I pulled the hatch panel on my '94 XFi, and broke several of the little clippy things a while back to check. No wiring what-so-ever in mine. I wasn't about ready to go through the effort to wire it. |

I have a '92 2weeks old to me and I'm a stereo nut. My front, lower dash speakers are wired and rear hatch are as well. Although there's space for quarters, I didn't see anything in particular that stood out showing they were wired in there. Also, this is a 2dr. Once I'm able to front the money after some of my gun shit is freed up, I'll strip the interior out, clean and dynamat it. Then run all new wiring since I plan to run amps on all the speakers. If I can remember to video it all, I'll do that as a guide for anyone. |

It would be awesome to see the guide if you make one! Several people seem to report having them only in the hatch and dash, with evidence of an expansion slot in the rear seat areas. I guess it all depends on model and year. Mine didn't have any from the factory, but someone put them in the dash and rear seat area where factory wiring was. My hatch has holes for speakers, in the metal, but none in the plastic panel and no wiring behind it. |
