I don't plan on touching it again until summer.

It's funny how early summer arrives in Ohio! Either that, or your car is coated with the elusive magical, self-buffing polish.

I rolled the car outside into the sun to get some clearer pictures. I have buffed out the hood, roof, and passenger side, but this shot shows the difference between the buffed out hood and untreated driver side fender.

The trim on the top of the doors and at the bottom of the rear vented windows is all sun cracked, so I removed it, cleaned up the adhesive, and will be looking for replacements.

I took off the rear outer and inner bumper. The car has never been rear ended and there's only one rust hole which can be easily patched.

Two years ago in March I was working on a 90 Metro in 50+ degree weather and went inside for lunch. I came out to find an inch of snow on top of the car!! You take what you can get around these parts!! :cheers

I was able to wrestle out the old, faded, cracked and torn up dash......

to make way for the new, clean one from a donor XFi.....I hope all of the connection points are the same. It looks the same size.

Grinded out a bit of the floorboard to get ready to replace it.

Found another buck or so in change that was jammed into the headlight button area....weird!!

I was also able to find some door panels in my basement that may work in the car. I also found a clean passenger and rear seat that look near perfect. The parts are coming together and being found pretty easily. On Saturday., depending on weather, I may power wash the crap out of the carpet to get it looking nice new (fingers crossed). The floorboards should be repaired by then.

Most Metros I've worked on have had door trim get cracked from sun exposure, but not the rear vented window trim. So I'll definitely need to replace that. I think I found some for the doors, so I'm good there. I appreciate your offer and will hit you up with a PM should I need anything.

Powerwashed the carpet today. First scraped off the threading from the matting on the bottom side (which I'll replace with new carpet padding), then hit it with an initial spray to break up the dirt, let it soak in soap for 30 minutes, then rinsed it all out to drip dry in the sun. Came out pretty clean.

The carpet dried pretty quickly, and it came out really clean. Unfortunately the previous owner had put a sheet of metal down on TOP of the carpet rather than underneath it to cover a hole in the floorboard, and it rusted and stained the carpet in a square pattern. Most of it came out, but some remains.

I went to Home Depot and picked up a roll of carpet padding for about $20 bucks. As soon as I repair the holes in the floorboard the carpet will go back in.

The new floorboards, made of license plates, are all down and fastened with self tapping screws, which were then ground off underneath the car to create a tight, rivet effect. Any gaps were filled with Great Stuff foam, which will then be smoothed out and sprayed over numerous times with rubber sealant top and bottom.

I like to use license plates for this process because of the aluminum composition. They're lightweight, strong, flexible, and rust averse. The entire area around where the plates were riveted down were cleared of rust and treated with rust converter before the process even began. I like to fill the body of the rocker panels with Great Stuff foam because of how it expands, giving the panel firmness and structure before I treat the outside with bondo and paint. Some purists argue that I'm defeating the purpose by using Great Stuff because it absorbs water, therefore contributing to future rust. I have done this with several of my cars, and if the water proofing and rubber sealant is applied correctly, this doesn't prove to be a problem....at least it hasn't for me in the past.

Tomorrow I'll peel off the expanded bits of foam and begin with the first of many coats of rubber sealant. More pics soon.

I was going to say that the foam would end up making rust a lot worse in the future. I sincerely hope it works for you.

Great job on the creative use of license plates!

Which carpet padding did you buy? Can you send a link?

I think it's made by Future Foam. 3/8" thick. Fairly moisture resistant.
