I have a 96 LSI 4 cylinder with a five speed manual. Over 240000 miles. Engine is tired and the car has lots of frame rust. I found a 99 LSI 4 cylinder that has an automatic and only 60000 miles and no rust. I would like to put my five speed in it. Will the PCM computer be ok with the five speed transmission?

Might as well just swap in the computer from your 5 speed car. It's right behind the glove box on the mk4/5 cars
Maybe not the 96 is an 8valve motor and the 99 is the 16valve?

will need to swap over the clutch pedal and drill the holes where the cable feeds though the dash and bypass the automatic neutral safety switch and hook up the reverse wiring. might have to remove the dash to swap the pedals and drill the holes. probably need the axles too and on the older ones have to do some cutting and drilling to put the 5 speed drivers side mount in. not sure about the newer ones. pipe out of rear of water pump is also different i believe

Everything should swap from your 96 as far as the mechanical parts go. I have the 5spd harness that goes from the ecm to all the stuff under the hood out of a 98 that should work.

Thanks for your help. The only reason I am considering this is that the 99 LSI has low miles and no rust. It is an automatic. My 96 has very 243000 miles and a lot of frame rust. The motor is tired and needs rebuilt which will cost 300 or 400 just for parts.

If you don't want to have issues with the engine you would need to find a 99 manual trans pcm. You could possibly need some wiring from the 99 manual trans car as well. The best thing to do is get a 99 fsm and compare the pcm connections for a auto and manual trans.

You would also need the clutch set up and shift linkage and cluch cable. That might all swap over from you 96.
