Caps pass high frequencies.
Likely your speaker is a 2 or 3-way and the cap is in series with the tweeter so it only responds to higher frequencies. The main cone of the speaker will be directly driven OR will have an inductor in-line with it (inductors pass low frequencies)

Makes sense JBD, and the sound coming from the speakers did seem to be passing only the high freqs.

Turbo3 and Twincam Tweaker

less expensive 4" speakers don't have the magnet structures, voice coils, or cone suspensions to support the longer excursion needed to reproduce lower frequencies. to keep them from being driven into a region that would shred the speaker people will limit their operation in the lower registers by using a capacitor as a filter.

as was stated above, caps provide a high pass filter. you may be seeing the high pass filter for a 2 way speaker or the cap may have been added to keep the woofer in a safe area of operation.
