just starting on the dirty pig but so far so good! I ordered a new fuel pump because the old one fail and upon removing the old fuel pump I realized that the gas tank was full of rust and other crap so I ordered a new fuel tank. I also and cleaned where the gas tank is located and I have painted it will undercoat paint that help keep moister and rust away. I plan on making this car showroom worthy again although it will take time. A little bit of back story to this car (not for sympathy but to show why I am going to restore this car) this was my mothers very first new car she bought it in 1992 off the showroom floor and had it for 8 years until she past away from terrible strain of strep. since then it had been sitting and rusting away id try to keep tarps and car covers on it to help keep the paint and try to prevent rust where I could and really I think it helped a lot the rocker panels are somewhat rusty but not bad and the brake and fuel lines will need replacing soon along with some floor pan repair and a good tune-up. here is what I have taken pictures of so far.

Welcome. The car seems very solid still and will be a good project. Its commendable that you have kept your mother's car all this time and that you are going to restore it. You will have all the help you need here on GMF.

thanks guys. I will have the fuel tank next Wednesday I home and ill need to bend some new fuel lines, I cant find a kit anywhere but who needs that haha brake lines are to bad I might leave those for a while. ill upload some more progress this weekend if I get around to working on it again the next step is freeing up the drums and getting some lug nuts to make sure those wheels stay on I don't think two lugs per wheel is a good idea haha

Welcome ChadC,
Here in the Richmond area Chesterfield Auto Parts (in Richmond on Midlothian Turnpike near Belt Blvd.) and the other 2 u-pull-it lots they own (Midlothian, and Colonial Heights) are a great source for metro parts. I just searched on their web page and they're showing they currently have a 90, three 96's, two 97's, and a 99. In the last year I think I've seen 3 or 4 verts pass through their yards, so it's likely that you'll be able to find special, scarce vert parts, and finding more common Metro parts isn't usually much of a problem. The prices at CAP are really good. Good luck on your build.

well being as anal as I am I had to have a OE fuel filter bracket so I went to chesterfield auto parts and found a bracket for the filter I also found some rust free fuel lines that go on top of the gas tank which saves me from bending new fuel lines. the metro I got this from was the 1990 hatchback Geo there is a set of 12 inch hub caps that look pretty good on this metro also if you guys are interested. and for my gas tank the new one is coming in this Monday so if everything goes well this metro will be out on the road once again!

Seems like people are taking their geos to the junk yards instead of fixing them every day... sad.

I wish I had that door panel for the driver's side. The only one I can find locally is busted up. Definitely nab the hubcaps.

If that panel is in good shape, and you're going back, let me know what you need for it with shipping to 43125.

When you say gas coming back up through the charcoal canister, are you talking about smelling gas vapors, or is raw liquid gas coming out of the canister's overflow tube?

If it is raw liquid gas, you may have one of the 3 fuel lines mixed up. There is the gas inlet to the throttle body, the return line back to the tank, and the vapor line. [there is also a short fourth line going to the rear of the car, from the center of the fuel pump lid to the gas cap area. This is the fill overflow line.]

There is also a one way check valve on top of the tank attached to the vapor line that you can check to confirm it is installed in the correct direction.

[edit] You can trace your lines as they come off the top of the gas tank, and make sure the gas outlet line from the fuel pump goes to the inlet on the bottom of the external fuel filter and the outlet pipe on the top of the external fuel filter to the gas line going forward to the throttle body.
