I see many interesting cars not available here such as this 3 cylinder Mahindra. Any other good ones that we don't have?

The Smart Sport never made it here...but I think they stopped making it ages ago. I still want one.

The thing about the regular Smart Car over here is that it only gets like 36mpg. Did this one do better?

I want a Tata Nano. Suppose to be a four door with a mouse for an engine. About a thousand pounds, carries four adults, and gets stupendous mpg's.

The Mitsubishi Mirage is like a Cadillac compared to a Nano or Mahindra. Or, at least that is what people living in countries where they are sold side by side say.

And we all know what the automotive press thinks of the Mirage...

But that little Mahindra with a diesel and a manual? For, say, $8000? I'd drive the shit out of one of those! Bet it folds up like origami in an accident, though!

Maybe it should be called the "Mahindra Origami"? Has a nice ring to it. :lol

We have/had the Diesels up here. These little guys have turbo gasoline engines, so I doubt they get that great of gas mileage. The shape is a bit more aerodynamic, mind you, so it might do alright.

And a correction: they were called "Smart Roadster", not "sport".

Yeah, the Tata Nano is an interesting one but I read up on it and they say the safety is miserable. There was talk about bringing these over here at one time but am guessing it would have cost too much to upgrade them to meet US standards. I think the original idea was to make them the cheapest car available but that wasn't possible. Odds are it would still not sell and be a higher price than other better cars by the time it could be sold here.

Something else interesting is that I believe the Nano is GLUED together and not welded. This sounds bad but I understand the glue is actually stronger than most welds.

I wonder how many of these 3rd world cars would actually sell if they were brought over. It might be surprising. This article talks about the Mirage: http://wardsauto.com/industry/mirage-success-surprising-even-mitsubishi Even many Mitsubishi executives were skeptical that it would sell here and even those who thought it would were surprised by the success. Not everyone wants an Escalade.

There was one called the Snyder ST600C (a rebadged Dezhou-Fulu) that got around our crash-safety requirements because it had three wheels (legally a motorcycle in most states). It sold in small numbers for a few years until the EPA busted them for forging their emissions compliance paperwork. It had four doors, three wheels, and a 33.5hp 2-cylinder motor with a 4-speed constant-mesh transmission. It supposedly got 70mpg, but there was no official testing done.

I've read it was fairly roomy even with four people. You can fit a lot in a small car if you don't have to worry about things like crumple zones and structural integrity. ^o)

One came up on Criagslist near me a little while ago, but the price was insane. If the American public really wanted tiny cars with motorcycle engines and no crash protection, believe me, companies would find a way to bring them here. Where there's profit, there's a way. But I really don't think there's enough demand outside our little community of tiny-car fans.

Heck, even the older Metros wouldnt pass the new crash standards of today. I bet they would be death traps in an accident with even a mid size car. Id still drive it anyway, I ride motorcycles so anything has more protection than them. Id like the Smart cars better if they offered a stick shift like they do outside the US. They do use a manual trans here but its cobtrolled by a computer, no stick or clutch pedal.

Ha, nice find! The guy I saw wanted $5,300. The listing stayed up for months. I wonder if he just gave up. They sold for $8,000 new. That included a "deluxe sound system" complete with an SD card loaded with Asian pop music. :deal
