Hello everyone! New to the forum here, and Geo all together. So I'm hopeful one of you wonderful Geo vets. will be able to shed a little light on my situation. My girlfriend recently purchased a '97 metro LSI, (1.3L/4cyl) I've spent multiple hours physically searching, along with numerous attempts searching the web and a few other threads here to no avail. My issue is this: the CKS plug-in (opposite end of the sensor itself) is unplugged and I cannot for the life of me find where it plugs in at. I've looked from every different angle, and been covered up to my elbows in grease trying to find it based off feel. I've seen several diagrams show it located below the timing pulley, atop the oil pan. No dice. Any help/knowledge would be greatly appreciated!!! |

Are the crank angle sensor and the crank position sensor the same thing?? The plug itself has a gray outter shell, with the actual connector on the inside being orange. Pics would be a great help. |

Okay, I thought I was just blind, but that is the same place I had mentioned in my original post seeing it shown in diagrams, but there is nothing there! It's driving me crazy!!! |

I'd be willing to bet someone replaced the motor with an earlier version without a crank sensor and either just lived with the check engine light or did something so they couldn't see it/ it wouldn't come on. |

@Metromightymouse the car WILL run, but dies after letting off the gas. So if by chance that IS the case, it would have been alot of hassle for the previous owner. (Was an elderly woman, we purchased the car from the daughter after she passed away) but anything is possible I suppose. @Crvett69 I don't see any visible hole on or near the oil pan that seem suspect, especially not in that specific location. |

Like MMM says it was probably replaced with a 95 or older engine. You can install it by replacing the oil pan, oil pump and crank gear with the parts from or for a 96 or newer one. I'm guessing your service engine light is on or disconnected |

Interesting. Rockauto shows a CKS for 96 but not 95. Given its a 1.3L, the replacement engine is probably from a 95. |

That's the only other conclusion I can come to.. 😧 The check engine light is currently on. Where "should" the EIN be located for this car? I'd like to see if it matches the VIN. |

Engine serial number is not the same on these cars as the Vin number |

That seems kinda dumb... So is there anyway to match the two to see if is actually is a different engine? |

ok, first thing, your 1997 will require a cps, regardless of an earlier year engine swap. if you would be swapping 97 to an obd1 car you do not need it, but you MUST install one to swap a pre96 into a newer model. If I read your first post correctly, Crash, your car has the cps installed, but the plug end is just hanging? You should have a cel/ses light if this is not connected. The fact that you DO NOT worries me. if I remember, the cps on the 3 cyl and 4 cyl are located a little different. 3cyl is on/in the oil pan. 4cyl is in the block behind the pulley.
