Hello all. This is a game idea that might be fun to play. In the last decade or so, it seems that car makers have come up with a lot of new ideas - some great, some meh, some awful - into their new cars. The game is all about identifying potentially awful ideas: (1) list the feature (2) describe a car which has the feature, and how it's supposed to work. (3) describe how you think the idea has failed or will eventually fail. I'll start it off with a few examples: Selective Headlight dimming during turn signal operation (1) Car's low beam headlight will turn off on the side corresponding with activation of either your left or right turn signal. (2) This feature is found on many Chryslers, and a few premium German cars. The idea is to make the flashing turn signal more noticeable by turning off the headlight beside it, especially when making left turns. (3) At night, when you signal to turn left at an intersection, and if your right headlight happens to be burned out, the left headlight will still switch off, and your car will be invisible to oncoming traffic as you make your turn. Engine Start/Stop at traffic lights. (1) When stopped for several seconds and brake is depressed, the engine switches off. When brake is released, starter engages and engine restarts. (2) Many new cars, including BMW and Mercedes have this feature. Some use a conventional starter, others use a combination starter/alternator to restart the engine. (3) Unless there is a defeat mode for this feature, a weak starter or dying battery will make for an interesting ride home. |

Every car I have seen with the headlight feature has multiple lights on both sides, usually including a fairly bright driving light lower in the front fascia, making a lack of enough light to see, or be seen, very unlikely. |

and they are usually LEDs. Back in the day my family had a Dodge Aspen. when it was off and had no keys in the ignition if you turned on the emergency flashers the radio would turn on and off with the flashers, so would the wipers. that car was a total POS! |

Feature- self driving assistance from an Nvidia GPU (graphics processor) Mercedes future tec cars, Nvidia made a special pascal GPU that is SO power hungary it has an AIO liquid cooler attatched to the chip. as thermal paste in a computer gets old it starts to not perform quite as well as it did the first day, with this power hungry graphics card running the self driving lane assistance what is going to happen when the chip starts to thermal throttle due to a multiple failure point, lets say you live in arizona, your car has been sitting in thr parking lot and its 180° inside the cabin, your self driving type car is like 8-10 years old second hand even. well when that AIO cooler starts to fail, the paste starts to get hard, and the air conditioner is broken. What is this high performance proccesor going to do when components begin failing? Most GPUs throttle around 90°C will there be enough junk in place to keep the car going? or will this type of car be scrap metal after 8 years? i have a very powerfull computer as it is, they are high maintenance. dust, shock, and software is a pretty constant thing to take care of. these ultra performance computer cars i do not see lasting that long. |

ZXTjato, you have a great point there. The self driving hardware itself may suffer a catastrophic failure due to heat/aging. Hopefully there is a fail-safe mode that hands control back to the driver if/when the processor fails. Here are some more examples: Pull-drift compensation (1) A steering system enhancement which assists during travel on high crown roads, or roads prone to crosswinds. (2) Ford offers this on late model Fiestas with electronic power assist steering (EPAS). The steering motor provides automatic counteractive force to keep car going straight without driver having to apply corrective steering force. Presumably this system also masks the effect of torque steer on FWD cars. (3) Unsure how this system would behave on a wavy roads where road slope rapidly changes from left to right, or how it works if the steering components were bent after hitting a pothole or curb. Sometimes, you want to feel a symptom rather than wait for your control arm or tie rod to fracture. Anti-nibble cancellation. (1)Anti-nibble cancellation is a feature on cars with Electronic Power Assisted Steering.. (2) Offered on many Fords including Mustangs. Vibration from unbalanced wheels or worn brake rotors that could cause shimmy, judder, or wobble are cancelled by applying opposing forces to correct for the imbalance, so that the driver does not feel unpleasant high frequency feedback through the steering wheel. (3) It would be good to know if this system would be able to cancel all vibrations from your steering until the last lug nut falls off your front wheel. |

It would be good to know if this system would be able to cancel all vibrations from your steering until the last lug nut falls off your front wheel. lets keep coddling drivers and make them oblivious to the world. I know I can tell in my car when the engine is at a higher or lower temperature just by SOUND alone. |

To comment on the engine start/stop, I think this will be a fail. My neighbor has an expensive riding mower that he would shut off all the time to load leaves, etc into the trailer. The starter died in a few years. It's been replaced a few times already. As part of the money racket, the manufactures anticipate the rich people to head back to the dealers for the work to be done... on top of paying for a new battery, they will charge them $400 for a "reprogramming" fee. Lord only knows what the starter and labor rates will cost... Ugh... ![]() Edit: Spelling/Grammar Edited by mt999999, Mar 30 2016, 07:40 PM.

I may be wrong.....but I was under the impression these cars have a normal starter motor for cold starting........and a second starter motor that drives the main pulley by belt for auto start stop. |

Here is a good story about a new car feature gone wrong. http://www.denverpost.com/news/ci_28998719/woman-trapped-days-park-county-car-crash-sues |

They'll get to the point that when you buy a new car, you'll have to sign a waiver not to sue for any failure on the car's part that causes injury or death. |

Here is a surprisingly accurate article I found a little while ago. http://www.forbes.com/sites/jimgorzelany/2015/03/25/the-most-irritating-new-car-features/#2c85fd791ce1 I especially agree with the touch-screen garbage. I'm glad that the Mirage doesn't have a touch screen... but I really miss actual KNOBS for the Bass/Treble control. It makes it so much easier to not wreck while driving. Auto Start/Stop makes the list as well. Hopefully the auto makers take notes on articles like this. Sure, make the features available for those that want them, but don't force them on all new car buyers. |

There was a time back around the era of when Windows Vista came out when just about all the NVIDA chips made were doomed to fail. Multiple shortcuts were made during their manufacturing and age/heat killed them rather quickly. See http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/1004378/why-nvidia-chips-defective This was an industry wide problem. ANYTHING with these chips would eventually fail. This included the cheapest bargain basement PC from Wal-Mart to the most expensive gaming computers, video game consoles, etc. No brand was exempt. It took out Apples, Dells, you name it. Yes, many of the high-end cars drop in value quite rapidly for this reason. They become quite costly to keep on the road after 10 years or so. IT is not unusual to see a guy around here pick up a BWM 7-series for like a $1000. This started out as like a $90k+ car! I also helped someone sell a Cadillac that started having many electronics fail after about 12 years. Conor Edited by cwatkin, Mar 31 2016, 06:51 PM.

I hate the touch screens in cars and that was one thing that drove me to the Mirage. It seems they are forcing this stuff on with in almost all cars these days, even the cheap ones. Conor |

Also, how about this? http://www.wired.com/2015/07/hackers-remotely-kill-jeep-highway/ Chrysler had this hole fixed quite rapidly but what other holes are in other cars waiting to be hacked? Conor |
