My reaction to reading this headline was that 27 GMF members that own a Geo Metro convertible may have thought they had just hit the jackpot!

That was an interesting read, but I don't think convertibles are actually on the decline. They've always been a niche thing. 27 models sounds like plenty to me. None of you live in convertible country, either. Head down to Arizona or SoCal and you'll see that the convertible is alive and well. They're everywhere around here. I just looked on Phoenix's Criagslist and searched for convertibles (by owner only, to eliminate the dealers spamming ads over and over). The first 100 listings didn't even get me through the past 24 hours of posts. |

I am sure that is true. You see some in Missouri which would be great on a day like today but not when it is freezing rain in the winter or super hot in the summer. They are certainly not real common here and am sure you are right about the weather being a major factor in this. Southern CA is probably the ideal location. Conor |

There were plenty of them back in the 90s...they'd take a plain old vehicle and factory modify it in to a 'vert...probably don't see that any more because of crash safety regulations. They probably have to be built as a 'vert from the ground up. Or at least still manage to pass crash safety requirements after. |

I know where one is. The woman probably won't come off $3000 but the engine and trans are good. The paint is kinda dull but it has NO RUST so that is worth something. I bet it won't get started and will rot before it sells, knowing her. It has good compression and no synchro issues. I went through the engine earlier on so all the basic stuff like hoses, timing belt, water pump, engine seals, plugs/wires/cap rotor, thermostat, etc. were all replaced. Conor |

I was never a fan of convertibles since they hurt cornering performance, other than Miatas which were designed to be a convertible and handle great at the start. I would live a hardtop Miata though. I live tge BMW Z3 M coupe, lol, its ugly but cool and I like the looks. On warm days they can be nice, but on cold and hot days they arent so nice. 90 and up degree days arent fun unless you are driving fast, stop and go traffic in the sun sucks, haha. Ive had Miatas, a S2000 Honda, and a couple home made convertibles. My 95 parts 2 door is now a convertible until it gets cut up and parted out the rest of the way. Just having some fun driving it in the woods and in the subdivision.![]() ![]()

Turbo3 and Twincam Tweaker

i had convertibles from my junior year in high school until i signed on for military duty. then i didn't have a car for a couple of years but finished the service having owned about 5 "cages." as soon as i established myself in ohio i was right back to keeping a drop top car in the herd for summer driving, but honestly, i pretty much rode harleys when the weather was suited to it. i have owned at least one open car continuously from 1980 to the present and will always have one at my disposal - i'm just a vert guy! ![]() and as far as a vert lacking in handling, if they don't drive well i mod them until they do. 8 years ago while i was doing the scca autox weekend warrior thing my white 92 twincam vert continually turned in the fastest lap times. sponsored by the local miata club, i would hear those guys talking in low voices about what they needed to do to beat the metro. it got to the point where the dedicated use vette and porsche autox guys would look for my metro vert at the events and if i was there they wouldn't even back their cars off their trailers.the miata club sponsors politely asked me to not come to their sunday events any more. that was my last season.so, i call rubbish on that "verts don't handle" comment. my red twincam vert will run rings around most miatas and the only miatas that can even hang with it have had butt loads of cash thrown at them. i'm not 'dissing miatas but front drive cars are way competitive with rear drive cars on any course with tight corners and short straightaways. if cars on a road course come out of the carousel and into a straight stretch of road, hp rules until the next corner. when i set up for the corner i can stay low and cut the faster cars off in the turn, accelerate out of the turn and still maintain the bottom of the track into the next corner. ![]() i have actually had other drivers complain to judges about my "hogging" turns. it always made me laugh when they would pound on their steering wheels and throw little fits.

I hope there is never a time when convertibles aren't available to buy. I was glad to see Buick is coming out with an "affordable" model, although I haven't seen one yet. I have had four verts in my lifetime, the first one being a '68 VW Beetle I drove in college. I've had Fluffy since 2001 and have no intention of ever getting rid of her because there is no other feeling quite like driving with the top down. |
