https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rdbMRwEpmxg Now there are certain things those of us with Geo's don't have to worry about including leaving behind a twin set of flaming tire marks as you see around 6:35. These are INSANE in the amount of power they put out. The heat from the friction actually lights the tires on fire but guess a giant supercharger will do that! This type of extreme burnout is apparently all the rage in the land down under. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CfFTOUfhOu8 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XFH-veC6AlY I notice one has a sticker for a tire distributor in the back window. They are certainly going to need that! Those of us with Geo's don't need to worry about lighting the bushes on fire with burnouts either. Conor |

Metros actually do leave twin marks if you put enough power to the wheels. Once you get moving, the twin marks begin to alternate though. I love watching burn out videos... |

Ive had tires catch on fire before, and also had a tar road catch fire after doing a burnout. It was cars with a non posi though. If you spin a tire long enough it will catch fire, even a Metro can if you helped it with some oil on the ground to get it going. Bad for the trans though so I wont try it. |

Won a burnout contest one time a few years ago. Local car club has a big 'todo' every labor day weekend. Knew it was coming so I got prepared. 72 Dodge 1/2 ton, 318 V8, granny 4 speed, posi trac rear end. I found that my travel trailer rims was a 'bolt on' For those who do not know, travel trailer tires are very hard tires creating no traction and tread is designed to combat side to side resistance, not fore and aft. With those tires plus a light pick up I could start off in granny 2nd, just barely get rolling, rev the engine and drop the clutch, hold the front brakes and both back tires would scream at 40 MPH but with the brakes I could keep the truck moving at about 1 MPH. After about 3 blocks I finally let up,,,,,,,,,,,and smoke covered the contest area for about 15 minutes........ Edited by Old Man, Mar 31 2016, 12:44 PM.

Yes, these burnout videos are pretty cool! I have always thought it would be fun to enter a Geo Metro into a burnout contest for laughs! It would have to be lined up with a bunch of muscle cars. My thinking was to pull the parking brake and let it rip. I don't know if the back end of the car would frag or not but I guess weight could be placed in the rear hatch to help keep the back wheels on the ground. Maybe some oil of bleach could be added to the front tires to assist in getting this going. I then thought for good measure you would run a hose from the passenger compartment to the intake and have a funnel in which you dump some motor oil and have it sucked in while you are burning out. This way you could have your own oil fart to supplement the smoke from the burning of the tires. Or I guess you could overfill the engine with oil until it reaches the valve cover which would probably accomplish the same thing. Of course I have never done this because I don't want to tear up my Geos! There seem to be a lot of things that could be damaged by doing all of this as our cars may be tough but aren't exactly the most heavily built. Conor |

That first car that caught fire was an old Toyota Corolla about 1974 or so. I used to stock car race one in the old days. But it never had a V8. |

I guess car fires are quite common. I don't seem to come across them all that often but some of my friends always seem to see them, pretty much at least once per week. I guess poorly done modifications that dump too much fuel, melting the cat, or electrical add-ons like a big sound system are the common culprits. I kinda doubt many people set their cars on fire by burning out the tires. I suspect these are mostly racing rated tires. I would think the heat and rotational forces would cause most tires to come apart at the seams before they would catch fire like these videos. Here is an example of a tire explosion that really did some damage: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fFdCKRlgQVQ That car certainly didn't have a lockup rear end as it looks like only one was spinning. Also, a lot of people who enter into these county fair type burnouts like to use an old worn out tire that is junk anyway so wonder if that might have played a role in this one. I have only had one car catch fire. It was a junk Metro that the previous owner had shot up with pistols. I bought it cheap for parts. I had removed most of the big ones and was cutting it apart to send to the crusher when it caught fire. Some good parts I hadn't removed were unfortunately destroyed but I was able to put it out and prevent it from spreading. Conor |

Yes, the Metro will just drag the back wheels around instead of sitting and doing a smoky burn out. Have to use wheel chocks or something like. |

I know these are a light car. How about you put 300 lbs of sand bags or something in the back hatch? Will it still drag. One of my buddies got stuck in a 2WD pickup. 8 guys including myself jumped in the back and it pulled right out. Conor |
