My wife's uncle is a car dealer, and he ended up buying this convertible from a guy for $700. It's a 1992 automatic with a recently rebuilt engine and solid frame horns. However, it has the typical rocker rust and bubbles. So my job will be to repair them. More pics soon.

Nice buy.☺

Judging from the paw prints on the top, someone's cat will need a new spot to sun itself

When I got the car into the garage, I realized the top is not white, but gray.

Around these parts scarlet and gray is a big deal!!

I got the inside stripped out last night, and YUCK!!! Apparently there were a bunch of feral cats camped out in the thing, because that carpet and padding was NASTY! Piss smell that I can't get out of my head. But I also found mouse droppings, so it would make sense cats were in there, too.

The previous owner had glued down the underpadding with so much glue it covers the entire floor of the car. Good news is there's no rust on the floorboards, so that's good.

But the rockers have more rust than I thought. And the PO, instead of removing the rust, treating it, then applying bondo, just slapped a bunch of bondo on top of the rust. Eventually the rust inside swelled and pushed out the bondo, causing it to bulge and crack. It all needs to come off.

More pics soon.

EDIT: By the way, the black slide plastic inside of the gear shifter control is all busted out. Does anyone have a replacement for sale??

It's been a few weeks since I last posted, and I've made a lot of progress on the rockers. As a matter of fact, the passenger side rocker is all done, and I'm almost ready for paint on the driver side.

Before shots...nasty bondo on top of rust

Getting there....

Finished....at least with the passenger side

Secondly, I wanted to try a technique for fixing the sun-cracked trim piece that holds down a portion of the convertible top;

Posted Image

So after razor-knifing the loose stuff off, I coated it pretty well with bondo.

Posted Image

Sanded it down, then hit it with black plasti dip and black krylon paint.

I'll get more pictures when I get them on the car. They're looking pretty good thus far.

It's Great Stuff foam. I cut strips of aluminum and fit them up into the rockers after I clean all the rust out and spray rust converter throughout. Then I fill the rockers with foam. As it expands it pushes the aluminum strips toward the holes and gives me some shape to work with. Then I use bondo hair, sand, then regular bondo for smaller areas. Sand, primer, bedliner spray, then matching paint.

Looks great! My only concern would be if the great stuff absorbs any water that might leak where it likes to leak at the corner of the convertible top. Would it repel it or sponge it? If it sponges it up, that might not end well.

I'll have to try that method for the trim pieces on mine, but perhaps with a little bit more rough paint. Bed liner seems too bumpy.

It's a closed cell foam....no water absorption.

I've used this technique on other convertibles, and thus far there has been no additional rust. I treated my current 1993 Geo Metro convertible using this technique about 4 years ago, sold it to a friend who trashed it, then bought it back. Not only have the rockers held up but I see no evidence of further rust spread.

The red 92 had crappy carpet and needed replaced. So I ended up ordering new for both the magenta 93 and red 92 at the same time. I removed the carpet from the magenta 93 and laid it on top of the new dark gray carpet that came in this box....

Posted Image

The carpet is a bit wrinkled so I laid it out in the sun to stretch it out a bit.

Posted Image

I laid the carpet from the 93 on top of the new carpet for the 92 to get an idea of the cut marks....it's apparent I'm going to need to do some trimming around the outer edges.

Posted Image

Starting to wrestle it in a bit.

I should have it all done tomorrow.
