I didn't start this thread to bash, or even debate, religion, so let's ALL cool it with the, religion vs atheism, speak. *including me* I just know that, from reading thousands upon thousands of postings, in hundreds if not thousands of posts in my 4 yrs here, that there are others here who think like I do. I just wanted to see if any of them were going to make the Hajj to our, occurring every-election-year, "Mecca"? If so, perhaps I'll run into you there, or otherwise have some favored moments from it to share, upon our return from it. |

Good point. And I do like the civil conversation we are having. I'd ask though if you believe in Alexander the Great? genghis khan? Socrates? The Holocaust???? or any major event in history that was written about. Then take the amount of written literature and pieces of information for any or all of the above and then some.... and compare the amount of literature that was written about Jesus or God that literally was found thousands of years apart on separate continents when there was no way for a row boat to travel such a distance. And these pieces of literature said the same things and were thousands of years apart. At the end of the day, I guess it may be me, but even IF we are wrong about a Heaven and Hell I would rather that person think there was a Heaven and live their life in such a way that would exemplify being good. Versus having a neighbor that didn't give a damn and used their own rules and judgment to live their life. Not saying that all atheists are bad or that people that believe in Christ are all perfect (they aint). But if I had to pick a neighbor I'd pick the latter. Many to all

And it is due to the pervasiveness of that very *cough* "rationale", that those like me, unfortunately, in this "enlightened" day and age, feel we need to hold a rally, that, if for no other reason, seeks to secure our freethinking rights from being further trampled upon by those that would, and already have, been handed the reins of our, horse 'n buggy political system. The examples you gave were actually written about at the time that they occurred, and they are corroborated by multiple cultures of the time( upon which they had a great affect), and archeological evidence. " Versus a neighbor who doesn't give a damn"... Give a damn about what? Your beliefs? If they're good neighbors what is it they're not giving a damn about? I hate to break the news to you, but we are aware of just about aware of every society and culture on Earth. Guess what? Every single one has prohibitions on murder, rape, theft, and lying. Why? Because you can't have a functioning society with people behaving that way. Interestingly, the penalty for adultery varies widely in the world. Being good to your fellow primates could certainly be based on someone giving you a biscuit, why not? Good is good. That is just not morality. |

Whether my neighbor says to me God bless you, or may you live long and prosper, I appreciate them equally as sincere good wishes. |

I would much rather be close to, or friends with or live next to someone that may actually...follow something like this: The Ten Commandments 1.I am the Lord, your God. 2.Thou shall bring no false idols before me. 3.Do not take the name of the Lord in vain. 4.Remember the Sabbath and keep it holy. 5.Honor thy father and thy mother. 6.Thou shall not kill/murder†. 7.Thou shall not commit adultery. 8.Thou shall not steal††. 9.Thou shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. 10.Thou shall not covet‡ your neighbor's wife (or anything that belongs to your neighbor). versus someone that just looks at my wife or has no issue with stealing or similar. and this is from Moses' time Edited by 702852, Apr 3 2016, 04:20 PM.

And you think that, by excluding around 30% of the population that are atheists, agnostics, apatheists, and non-believers, some of which are not only extremely well educated, but the embodiment of ethical behavior and benevolence, that you are part of the solution and not part of the problem? What this country needs, isn't, necessarily, an atheist president or atheist next supreme court appointee, what it needs, is to elect/appoint the best, most qualified, person for the job, regardless of their beliefs. When you exclude 30% of the population for consideration for either of those posts, simply because of you own, irrational and unjust, personal biases, you have NO RIGHT TO COMPLAIN ABOUT THE STATE OF CURRENT AFFAIRS. ...and on a side note, Happy.....................3000th post, to ME! "I'd like to thank all of the "straight man" postings, that, usually unwittingly, helped inspire so many of mine." *takes a bow* Truthfully, though, I could'a had like 3017 postings, by now, if I'd wanted to, but I was going for quality over quantity. |

I know several atheists and non believers....one of which has 3 masters degrees and is VERY very smart. Lets not dig too deep....

What, they didn't have sails back then(lol). When the first missionaries arrived in China, a civilization that dwarfed anything ever produced elsewhere, and told the emperor, he asked, " If this is true, why has it taken so long to reach China?" I guess the exception would those " golden plates" found later in upstate New York... |

"versus someone that just looks at my wife or has no issue with stealing or similar. and this is from Moses' time" I want to be sure I understand you. You're saying that if someone doesn't believe in the ten commandments, they, " Don't give a damn"? You keep kind of inferring that without people believing in your religion that they are going to be inclined to immorality. If someone is a good neighbor what difference does it matter what they believe. Still, if you are JUST saying that you would rather live next to a christian, well, there is nothing wrong with that. Should be easy given that we are a majority christian society. |
