Loud Noise From Rearend

I was driving down the interstate today doing right at 55 mph when all of a sudden a loud noise came from the rear that sounded exactly like I ran over something big in the road. I saw nothing in the road and my front wheels never felt hitting anything. It sounded like both rear wheels had run over something. When I got home there was another noise when I parked the car but the noise was not very loud. I have for sometime had that loud clunk noise from the rear and was never able to determine what that was. I even posted on here about the clunk and and others have also reported hearing a clunk but not much came from that post. I just lived with it. But the noise today was terrible. Any ideas? I got under the car and could not find anything loose.

Bad belt on a tire? That will cause a lot of road noise, rumbling in the cabin. Jack up the rear & rotate each tire by hand as you watch it. Look for bumps & bulges.

Check your struts. Look inside the trunk in each corner there should be a platic cover and then under that cover is a rubber boot and under that you will expose the strut mount. I had a problem where the nut vibrated loose and it had plenty of play as well as made a clunking noise

A 1999 would have a rear stabilizer bar, and that could have a broken link or bad bushing. If all else fails, climb under there and take some pictures, then we can all have a look.

Might try looking at your rear brake shoes. Maybe something happen within the drum assembly.

:gp

when the mounts on the spare tire well rust out, you can get some 'unique' sounds as it flexes.

I could not resist; bad gas. On a serious side how often are you hearing the noise? I would jack up the rear end and do a quick shake through off the various different parts starting from the wheels going in.

I only had a few minutes to look under the car before rain started. SILVER2K, As far as the tires, they are almost new. The noise lasted only for a second or 2 like I hit something in the road would make. GEOJAKE, that was the first thing I look at, all nuts are tight. DonDowdy, I'll take some pics today if weather permits. Dayle1960, will do that also. I was wondering if when driving along the brake shoes would somehow just engage the brake shoes? Is it possible? SPHENICIE, this car is almost perfectly rust free, spare and jack are down tight. SOLARPOWER, only the driver has bad gas! I heard the noise on a round trip of about 20 miles going and on return all was fine until I pulled in the yard to park and then I heard another noise, but different kind for a split second.

The stabilizer bar end links are bad, but i don't think that's what the noise is. Any weight in the back of the car, like someone in the back seat? If the rear shocks are bad, the exhaust gets banged by the rear suspension when you have extra weight in the back. Put somebody in the back seat and see how low the rear end squats.

No weight in the back. Struts were replaced about 3 years ago with KYB struts.

Make sure that the pinch bolts holding the collars around the lower end of the struts are tight and the little metal tabs are in the collar gap. If they're even a little loose the collar will slip down the strut when weight comes off it and then slam down when they load back up.

Could you rock or bounce the car in driveway to reproduce noise?
