How so? (1) Amazement that a painter had the talent to apply a great paint job, (2) An owner had taken the time and expense to restore an old car's finish or, (3) Trepidation that your car will be a magnet for the next errant shopping cart or car door to start the cycle over again with a new ding. |

Now that the car is painted I can focus on the interior. When stripping out the old carpet I noticed significant enough floorboard rust to merit a fix. Nothing a few license plates, some fiberglass underneath, rust converter and sealant won't take care of.![]() The previous owner blew out four of the six speakers. Good thing I keep a stash of them from old parts cars and such. I'm not looking to install a top-of-the-line sound system in this thing, but it has to have decent sound to go with the Jensen stereo. ![]() Got the new carpet....the color is called "smoke." ![]() Placed the old carpet on top....made my marks and cut into the new carpet. You only get one chance to get it right!! ![]() Fit in PERFECT!! I still need to cut the holes for the seat bolts and safety belt, which ironically takes a lot more time than one thinks. ![]() My new hatch struts arrived today....no more hatch stick!! ![]() Question....does anyone know where I can get the black strip that goes into the slot on the trunk lid?? I could probably tape it off and fill it with black RTV, I suppose.

Well you've got me curious about the entire process. 1. What made you decide to use Maaco? 2. How was the quote process negotiated? 3. How much time between the quote until they began spraying the car? 4. What prep did YOU do and what prep did THEY do? 5. How long did Maaco have your car? 6. Did they spray a clear coat over the magenta? 7. Which level of paint job did you get? I noticed on their website that there is 4 levels. 8. Would you recommend any other metro owners use Maaco? 9. 1-10, what is your overall opinion of the Maaco paint job? 10. Did they spray paint the underside of the trunk lid? If you asked, would they spray it? 11. Did they spray the door rockers? 12. How much interior trim did you take off and did they spray those areas the trim was covering? 13. Did they spray the door hinge area? I might have a few other questions but this list will do for now. |

1. What made you decide to use Maaco? They're local and cheap. Plus they did good work on a Volkswagon Vanagon of mine a few years back. 2. How was the quote process negotiated? I took the car in, told them I wanted primer and paint with no clear coat, and they gave me a quote of about $550. 3. How much time between the quote until they began spraying the car? I took it in about a week after they gave me the quote. I needed time to do some bodywork and to remove a bunch of plastidip. 4. What prep did YOU do and what prep did THEY do? I sanded off the Geo and dealer emblems and did some basic bodywork, like glassing the rockers. I also removed the headlights, markers, turn signals, rear center cap and taillights, door trim, mirrors, and trunk trim. They fixed a rust bubble on the rear wheel well for no charge. 5. How long did Maaco have your car? Five days. 6. Did they spray a clear coat over the magenta? No. Doing so would have doubled the price of the paint job. There's enough urethane in the paint for UV protection. 7. Which level of paint job did you get? I noticed on their website that there is 4 levels. I think I got the preferred. 8. Would you recommend any other metro owners use Maaco? Yes, of course. 9. 1-10, what is your overall opinion of the Maaco paint job? Probably an 8. 10. Did they spray paint the underside of the trunk lid? If you asked, would they spray it? No, but they probably would have for an extra fee. It wasn't important for me to do so. I have access to rattle cans of magenta if I wanted to do it. 11. Did they spray the door rockers? Yes, but not all the way under. 12. How much interior trim did you take off and did they spray those areas the trim was covering? I just took off the trim that holds down the carpet on top of the door jam. They feathered a little paint into that area, but it was already magenta. 13. Did they spray the door hinge area? No, but again, it was already magenta. Edited by GeoStalker, Apr 29 2016, 07:33 AM.

$550! I spent that much on my "roller" project. I'm thinking of having my '93 professionally painted, but I'll have to remove the Rustoleum first. Wish I had done it professionally to begin with. The Rustoleum, at least the color I chose, looks dull very quickly after polishing. |

I've pretty much finished up the car. After the paint it was all trim and other details, which took a few days. Such as this area in the trunk. It formerly had black trim in it, but it was dried and cracked, so I painstakingly peeled it all out before it was painted. ![]() So I taped it up and put black RTV into it. Such a tiny detail but it really makes it pop. ![]() The interior cleaned up really nice and a new, clean boot cover is a nice touch. ![]() The seats are filthy, so these black seat covers will have to do for now. And yes, I know the air bag tags give away that I put them on the wrong seats! ![]() I just have to put on some rubber window molding and the car is finished! ![]() ![]() ![]() Edited by GeoStalker, Apr 30 2016, 06:11 PM.

![]() Especially that black trim in the trunk lid; that really does help! Did you have to use painters tape to make clean lines, or did the RTV go into the crease smoothly? |

Taped it off, filled it with RTV, ran my gloved finger over it to smooth it, and pulled off the tape. Came out real clean.

Unbelievable. You made it look new again inside and out in, what, two weeks? Great job! ![]() That's a great price on your paint job. My car would require lots and lots of dent repair before I could do something like that, and I agree on what JM and SuzukiTom said. I'll stick to just washing and waxing the paint that remains, and focus on making the interior perfect, where only me and passengers of my choosing get to touch it. I'll laugh at the sad state of my car's paint, and I'll admire the efforts of people like you who go the extra mile on the outside, respectfully, from a distance.

Wow! looks fantastic. Maaco actually has professional painters and great spray booths. Both hard to duplicate at home. You sure get a lot of bang for your buck. Geostalker makes me look lazy. |
