For once I actually know what to do lol. I know how to change inner and outer tie rod ends. I tried looking for a guide to make sure anything isn't different or unique to a metro but could not find one for them. Am I missing it or does it not exist yet?

Practically none of the guides on this forum are pinpoint accurate with the FSM but more geared towards how one person did the job. That is not a bad thing but if you want specifics then you should read the FSM. There are often better ways of doing things then what FSMs say so reading and learning how others did it is not bad as long as it gets the same results or results your happy with and is not dangerous in the process. FSMs should be consulted first despite whatever you do. Atleast learn what the makers of the car have to say about it. Then read how personal experiences did it or even other repair manuals such as haynes which may offer differant methods and sometimes better methods than FSMs. Above all, be safe and make safe repairs.

I drop the entire rack and steering with everything and do both at the same time. Way easier in my opinion. Now I need to consult the FSM to see what the procedure is actually.

Just my .02...This is the easiest way to do it if your doing both inner and outer...just a few tips: remove the lower steering shaft bolt and only loosen the upper one, the shaft will slide up and off the rack,... if you have an airbag equipped Metro, tie off the steering wheel so it doesn't rotate, if it does it could damage the clock spring,...soak the U clamp bolts with P B Blaster, even here down south they have a tendency to rust and strip on the way out...when removing the rack it comes out the drivers side,...and if you use the old inner tie rods as a guide you can get the adjustment pretty close so you can drive it to get it aligned...one last thing, pack the inner rack with grease before installing the boots...

:gp Good info guys. :thumb

I did mine in the car a few months ago. Never again. Pull the rack and save yourself some time while making the job easier. :deal

I must cosign with the above mentioned thoughts.....pull the entire rack, it is much easier.

Further, if you make accurate measurements, there should not be a need to do an alignment. Be careful to not just look at the over all length, but instead, the center to center measurement (of the stud), as different outer ends may have larger/smaller housings.

So general consensus is to pull the rack and do it that way. On the ones I've done there was no grease in the boots. Not even traces of it. Should they be greased? And I hear a metal zip tie works or a good clamp to hold the boot on.

I did the tie rods with the tool. Worked very well and took it back to get my deposit. 1 3/16 was the size that fit like a glove. Both my inner and outer were heavily worn / shot. The boots had no grease so I left them dry

I know everyone is saying to drop the rack, but I've been trying to do the inner and outer without dropping it. I have the inner installed and I'm trying to bend the washer lip over to secure the inner tie rod but I'm having a difficult time with this. I did not put threadlock on the inner since I read it's better to just secure them with the washer, but I don't have much room to manipulate a bend. Any advice on this task? Should I just take it off, put on some threadlock and call it good?
