A/C shuts off at idle. 93 3/5

I just rebuilt the A/C system on my 93 3/5 4 door and when I'm sitting in traffic the compressor turns off and stays off. But when I'm driving its ice cold. I've cleaned the condenser and the condenser fan is coming on at idle. I've racked my brain and can't seem to find the problem.

You may want to check your pressure, hook up the gauge and watch it, as if the car was sitting in traffic, if the pressure rises too high it will shutdown, I suspect that is your problem, with a/c adding a little more for good measure is a bad thing..

The A/C was just rebuilt. The exspantion valve was not changed. But all the O-Rings were lines blown through and the condenser too.

I like to see 200 on the high side gauge, and 44 on the low side gauge when it is 100 degrees. My Metro A/C systems seem to work the best if I wait out the 100 degree temp and service it for those numbers, rather than doing the math for lower temps. It seems like a sweet spot.

I also suspect that mrbreeze's suspicion is correct, that the pressure switch is shutting off due to either high or low pressure.

If you have pressure gauges you can use the FSM diagnostic procedure in Section 1B, Air Conditioning. Since you know the compressor works above idle, you can start with Chart B, and skip the first step that applies power to the clutch to check it, and continue down the "clutch engages" conditional branch of the procedure.

If you don't have a system leak, then it's possible you have a plugged expansion valve or other high side restriction and the pressure is higher than it should be at idle and shutting down the compressor.

All the AC lines were taken off and blown through with the cleaner. I'm going to change the expansion valve

Ok so all parts are changed but I called my local guru and he said he's seen lots of 89-93 cars have problems with R134a b/c the condenser is to small, so he recommended using Duracool freon and it's working. But I need to buy another can b/c they're only 6oz can. Hopefully this is my last time dealing with it. :rocker
