I've been trying to secure the locking washer on the inner tie rod but I can't manipulate the lip in the limited space I have available. I have not removed the steering rack and I was hoping to avoid that since I didn't want to mess up my steering wheel alignment, but now I'm having trouble bending the washer lip over to lock the tie rod in place. Does anyone have a suggestion on this? Should I just put some threadlock on the inner tie rod, tighten it down and call it good? |

I'm new to this forum but I've been reading random stuff and I thought I remembered "tie rod" and "thread locker" or "Loctite" mentioned in the same breath more than once. I suggest a search, specifically in this suspension forum using different relevant key 2-word combinations like these: tie rod thread locker lock washer Good luck my Homey. PS love your username. |

it is far easier to do the job by pulling the rack. rebuild it on the bench, but do your lay out measuring before you change anything. if you take your time and work accurately, you will not mess up alignment. |

I second this. Don't waste time trying to do it on the vehicle. |

I've done this job a couple times with the rack on the car without serious problems. I wouldn't trust lock-tite and it will be a pain to get loose for the next person. Make sure the wheel is turned to give you the maximum access to the lock washer. Vise-grips or channel lock pliers usually work to bend the washer. You can also start bending the washer when the part is off the car in order to make it easier to catch with the pliers. Edited by Wolf, Jul 3 2016, 02:29 PM.
