I understand that, I have two in the head, but I don't believe they are removable, or they don't seem to be. In the pic above he has two in the block so that's why i was asking. |

There are only two and they come out with Vise Grips carefully wiggling back and forth and pulling. |

Or just set them in the retainer before you push it down. Once the retainer drops past the grove in the valve stem, the keepers will fall into place. Put something on the bench, just below the valve to prevent it from moving while you push the retainer down, and it will go easier. |

I noticed in the repair manual that you are supposed to put red silicon on each side of the head before you put it back on, could anyone post a picture of the head showing exactly where the stuff needs to be applied(perhaps drawing a red outline on the head in MS paint)? It goes into no detail in the manual, it just points to the general area of where it goes. This thread rocks and it's inhabitants. |

1996 1.0L metro 170k miles ----replacing head gasket due to overheat and water in the oil. I successfully used the spark plug socket method to remove the springs and valves from the head. What items need to be replaced when rebuilding a head that was working before? I am replacing all valves, cam seal, head gasket(obviously) and head bolts. (forgive me, I am a novice) Do I need to replace lifters? they look fine to me as well as the springs. Do I need to replace the tiny metal pieces (0.3 inch long, halved cylinders: ID = valve stem OD) that fell out when I removed the valves? what are they called? retainers? Also, is there anything else I should take care of while I have things apart? I ordered a water pump and timing belt. thanks. Edited by electromdc, Oct 2 2009, 08:53 AM.

Just replace the exhaust valves with stainless steel and replace the valve stem seals. No need to replace the valve retainers. Only replace lifters if they were noisy before you removed the head. |

I've read in other posts that the 1.0 head should be milled before reinstall. Is that only necessary if it is warped? Does a Geo head develop rings (grooves) around the cylinders where the metal in the gasket contacts the head and block?

Normally there will be no ridge found on the cylinder walls and no need to mill the head unless it's warped. It's always good to check the head with a straight-edge. |

Here's a pic of the sticker that should be under your hood. This is for a '96.![]() It indicates the lower left two connectors are to be plugged. Some members and Moi set timing at 8 BTDC. Click on Geo Metro Forum → The Garage → Metro Tech and to the right of pages you will see New Topic. |

My question - where did you buy the parts for everything? And how much did it come to? I think I need to rebuild the top end on mine... |
