My 92 Geo Metro had a severe case of drivers door sag ..... I tried several local auto parts outlets, but it didn't seem there was a pin and bushing kit available. I picked up a universal door pin/bushing kit at Napa but it was too large, and each pin only came with 1 bushing ( WTF ?? ) so I would have needed to buy 4 kits to get the required number of bushing !! If I didn't have a lathe, the universal kits from Napa would have been my next choice, but I would have had to drill out the hinge fittings to accommodate the larger diameter pins and bushing. So , I decided to build my own !! Having a lathe comes in handy a lot ! Rather than try to type out what I did step by step, I took some photos and made a slide show on photobucket. So for those who are interested have a look ! 92 Geo Metro door hinge bushings A couple of notes if you watch the slideshow .... you'll see when I disassembled the hinge there was a plastic spacer between the bushings. I left this out when I re-assembled the hinge because I felt all's it accomplished was to trap moisture and corrosion and prevent any effective oiling of the hinges. Also, I didn't bother to put a groove in the new hinge pin for an e-clip.... I felt if the pin was installed right side up ( you'll see it wasn't to begin with) that the e clip wasn't really needed. Its back together now and I am very happy with the result, no sag ... and the door alignment worked out perfect Cheers ! |

I don't have a lathe so I went to the local junkyard and bought a spare set of hinges for $10. Took them home, cut out the old pins and bushings, measured them with calipers, then headed to the local Carquest. They have a pin and bushing kit #38400 that works. I used a tapered reamer to slightly enlarge the holes for the new bushings and drilled out the other holes for the pins. I think it was an 11/32" drill bit. When I used the tapered reamer I took a little from each side so it wasn't tapered as much as it could have been. A drill bit would have been better but I didn't have one at home big enough. I've got the driver's side on and it works good. The passenger side hinges are done but I haven't installed them yet. Derek |

I have this door sag on my 2000 metro on the drivers' door as well. I have an extra car laying around, would it work if I steal the bushings from a rear door and install them ? If no one replies I'm going to have to go ahead and test this myself.

Yeah I completed the modification today and there was a noticeable difference. I recruited the pins and bushings from the rear door of my 95 firefly. The old bushings all had cracks in them. Now the door does not sag anymore when it's opened. |
