Racing vent or dryer vent mod

Ok, this one is out of the pages of the weird. I have found that adding this did not hurt my mpg, but did give little more power on demand, and has kept my air filter clean for a long time. This is important due to the cost of our filters...

I have experimented with air intake and it seems no matter what you do, you still have a 55HP engine ;)

I see you have not found a timing belt cover yet.

That's an older pic. I found one, but it was older and did not clear the belt. I kept it on enough to set the timing then had to take it off again. The search continues...

I will say that it is amazing how quickly a timing belt can chew through a plastic cover. HA HA HA :D

I did that before learning anything about getting higher than EPA mpg ratings on cars, so I do not have any test data showing any kind of real improvement. I found it most beneficial in the time right after my rebuild. The car developed several oil leaks, which I had to chase down. An air filter for a Metro is about $15.00, and I had this vent, so I put it on. It kept the filter clean while I chased down the leaks and fixed them. You may or may not have that same problem. I left it on there afterwards because I think its cool. That and it still seems to keep my filter cleaner. I just open it once a week and shake the dead bugs out.

Johnny is right though, it is still 55hp. Also, if you are looking for max mpg I would not suggest this. It makes the air colder and denser. This could increase fuel requirements.

I noticed a good improvement with this. The first time i went to the track i ran a 19.2 @ 68.5mph. However, after i did this i went back and in the same conditions i ran an 18.9 @ 69.3, i had the same 2.4 60ft both times.

I'd like to find a piece of 3" mandrel-bent aluminum that comes around the timing belt cover and through the shield of the core support. There are many "cold air intakes" sold on eBay for dirt cheap that have multiple bends in them...most are for ricers. The stubby one made for Metros is actually more expensive than alot of them, and comes with less pipe. Anyone care to help figure out which application will work for us?
I really don't care if it doesn't help....just so long as it doesn't hurt MPG....It'll be for looks, and BS'ing people. hehe.

Fresh air intake ducts are great!...until you get caught in a snow storm!.I had a ford ranger PU with factory tube ,in snow it partially filled my air cleaner up with the white stuff, and started to sputter!Just somethin to think about. :hmm

that might even be hard to diagnose on something like z34's pic above, good call ill remember that.

however, I dont like the ribbed hoses, but maybe im just not a fan of power robbing turbulent inlet flow.

but then again we come back to the fact its a 55hp engine and all the percentages and shit all go out the window because 10% of nothing is nothing, but 10% of something is something :thumb

Here's another way to do it.
This was for my Grand Am using the aluminum dryer ducting. It stays in place better than the Bendable stuff, but it needs to be sealed at each connection point :)

With the xa and xb scions we found warm air intakes gave better fuel economy. So, you removed the snorkle so it sucked in heated air from under the hood or better yet, get a cai and just clamp the filter on the intake tube right under the hood or route metal dryer venting material to the exhaust manifold heat shield.

I'm thinking about something that can be done over the hood,
right above of the air cleaner... but haven't found a way to avoid the water...

Hey that's very ingenious Bent!!!! Are you sure it's not going to eat some water?? Cause we have a lot of rain these days... of course will try not to drive when raining... but just in case it may catch me on the road.

I have a filter like that somewhere on my garage... :rocker

Not a clue... it's not my creation. :D
I should think for a shower or rain, a form fitting cover over the scoop would work, drawing air directly off the hood. For a few miles. Maybe that question should be posed on TS? I want to see it installed before asking such obvious questions. :-/

Some reports have said turning it backwards works even better. :hmm NASCAR pulls air in the reverse direction from the hood/windshield area. F1 and NHRA use a forward facing scoop design. Motorcycle manufactures are designing bikes with Ram Air. :'(

I really don't want to do this post because I spent, no, wasted so much time on TS over this.
No Ram Air is not producing turbo pressure, never will but for a cheap addition I believe it, at the very least, reduces the energy needed to vacuum air into the cylinder from the air box in the RF fender. General consensus is cold denser air is better for power (the MAP/MAF/IAT should compensate) or warm air would aid in combustion as might a fuel warmer. From personal experience never ever use the word horsepower.

Bottom line and the one that counts the most... I like it.
