hello,
I am looking to do the XFI cam mod on my 91 metro 5spd. I have heard you need the XFI ECU to utilize the increase in mpg.
Is the ECU really needed? Also, the tranmission gear reduction would help, but i plan on using my stock metro trans.
What mpg increase would I see with JUST the XFI cam?

Is the ECM required? No. Will it help? Definitely. The XFI models had three things working together to create the mileage they did: Camshaft, ECM and 5-speed tranny with a different final gear ratio than the normal Geo tranny. Camshaft will increase your mileage, the ECM will make it better and if you can locate a true XFI tranny you will be well on your way to 50+mpg. As an alternate for the tranny, I have heard that you can substitute the 5-spd from a 4 cylinder model and get the same result.

Thanks, that helps. What would you estimate the mpg increase solely from a camshaft? 3-4 mpg increase? more or less than that?

I hear the cam gives you 5 MPG right off the bat.

5mpg sounds about right. The XFI ECM probably effectively doubles it. The tranny accts for about 2-3. My 97 avgs. 45-47 mpg this time of year and I know most XFI's are good for another 10 above that without even trying hard.

One more thing to think about is the 5 speed out of a Swift 1.3l 4cyl. car. They have a even taller gear than Xfi. The Xfi also has 1 compression ring instead of 2, I doubt it adds much to mileage though.

I would be more conservative with the cam swap numbers...I would say the cam alone increased my mileage by 2 mpg, but that's about it. As geeked as I was to see "great numbers" afterward, they never jumped like I expected. Still worth it though...
