Finally, after getting my reground XFI cam I decided to put in my newest Metro convertible. From start to finish it was a 3 hour job. Of course, I have all of the tools, the cam was sitting there collecting dust for 2 months, and finally I got the willpower to get 'er done. Basically I had to take the distributor off, pull the valve cover, take the water pump pulley, belt, and the crank pulley off, then remove the plastic timing cover. I had the crank at zero degrees TDC on #1, the cam wheel marks lined up, and I added some special markings in case I went brain dead and had to put the belt on without screwing up. It went in with no bother. I used Redline assembly lube on the lobes and the 3 cam bearings. While I was at it, I put in my 8 degree advanced cam wheel, lined everything back up and turned the engine over a few times by hand. I also marked the distributor and backed it off 8 degrees to run at the same timing I had before. In case anyone EVER forgets which way a Metro engine turns....just remember it goes the same way as the wheels. It started right up, ran fine, and I took it for a ride to get some Synthetic Automatic Transmission Fluid to drain and refill the 5 speed transaxle. It takes 2 quarts. The increased torque and polite low rpm response was immediate. This cam is a must for a short shifter like me. It pulls from 1200 rpm without much fuss. I can't wait to get the mileage numbers! For grins I will order some headbolts and head gasket and try grinding Singh grooves in the head. It promotes swirling and can only help in getting better mpg. I got the cam from Delta Camsaft...1938 Tacoma Ave. South, Tacoma, Washington 98402 Their Number is (253) 572-2474 I think it was $70. I sent in an old cam for a core and got back a nice looking one with XFI marked by the cam sprocket face. This was the easiest cam change I ever did! Whoever wants to do it and is scared....I'll be glad to help. ....Kim |

Thank you for the assurance that this job is still easy even after being in there once. I actually have an extra cam in my garage I got from Metroshultz. I want to get an XFi grind, but lately my wife has been driving and she really winds the car out ![]() I keep telling her about it, but gave up. I am now leaning more into putting a performance cam in the Metro for her sake and find another Metro for myself

Which rated auto trans fluid do you use for the metro 5 speed? Is this as good as Redline MTL? Thx |

My 8* and "economy" cam from 3Tech still sit in a box. My current JDM has the older pre-96 wheels, and the 8* is the 96-up wheel. Once I want to tackle getting the crank pulley/gear off again, I'll swap all the wheels/components and get them installed. Maybe my winter project? |

In the Automatic Metro slush-box, just use Dexron/Mercon fluid like any other GM. Welcome to the board

I think the question was meant to mean, "which auto tranny fluid can be put into a 5-speed?"... I have read a people doing it, but I'll just stick with Pennzoil Syncromesh... Hacksaw. |
