Free AMPs Left for AMP?

Is there an amplifier that won't be a battery killer for my 1997 Geo Metro. My little alternator I believe is rated at 55 amps. I would like to kick around the idea of adding an amp instead of just a high power stereo. So is there any free amps left so i can choose an amp accordingly?.

As long as you're not going for a real high powered amp you shouldn't have any issues.

A few hundred should be fine. Thousands will probably create light dimming.

without having a real handle on the electrical engineering, i'd tell you to check the fuse size on the amp itself. if it's a 5 amp fuse the amp will have too little power. if it has a 10 amp fuse it will be beneficial. if it is a true 100 watts per channel into 4 ohm speakers it will be more like 25 amps. if it has 2 35 amp fuses it is too big for your 55 amp alternator. ;)
