My 1990 Geo Metro started yesterday sounding like only 2 of the 3 cylinders were firing. Gave it gas and the car stalled. Now it won't start at all. Battery is fine. Do I need to change fuel filter? Where is it? Easy to do? ( I am non-mechanical). How do I diagnose if the engine is getting fuel or not? Thanks for any and all help. |

The engine needs 3 things to run. Compression, fuel and spark. To check the fuel, take the air cleaner off. Have someone crank the engine over while you watch down the throttle body for gas on the throttle plate. if you have fuel then you will need to check the other 2 to see what your engine is lacking. |

When you turn to key on (but don't start the car) do you hear the fuel pump hum for 2-3 seconds and then turn off? You should... |

I would check your spark plug wires, spark plugs, and look under the distributer cap |

I turn on the key and can hear the fuel pump engage but shouldn't I smell gas if the air filter is off and someone is pumping the gas? I just has new plugs, wires and distributor put in. How do I check/replace fuel filter? Thanks. |

I believe your fuel filter is near the left rear wheel by the fuel tank like on my 95-it's not too hard of a job just a little pain having to lie down a probably get a little gas down your sleeve-to change it loosen bracket, note position and remove bottom and top hoses-put new filter in same position and tighten hose clamps and secure bracket-when changing in a car that's running you need to relieve fuel pressure by cranking with fuel pump relay removed-actually you need to do that first because you said you can hear fuel pump running-this will prevent a spray of gasoline when you remove the hose-to check for proper delivery of gasoline observe fuel injector as key is turned-should see an even cone with no dripping, dribbling-maybe you can carefully pour a little gas into the throttle body put the air cleaner back on and see if it starts if your don't see any gas in there when the key is turned... |

No. There should be no gas in the throttle body until the engine cranks over. Go back up to freegeo's post #2 above. Look down the throttle body as someone turns the key to start, there should be a nice mist of fuel sprayed out. That makes me suspicious of exactly those parts. |

I thought about the distributor rotor when you said that codycannon5. Loose wire? And, as a member said, NEW means Never Ever Worked. Fuel filter on my 1991: http://geometroforum.com/single/?p=154185&t=2084120 |
