If I line up the cam like that, I'm almost positive the distributor rotor will be facing down, which is the wrong way, right? What should I do about that?

The distributor should only fit in one way and fit flush. It is made to be error proofed to keep it from getting it 180 degrees out. I will go take a picture of mine and post it.

there is a small roll pin in the bottom gear that fits into a small hole on the damper, make sure you line that up before tightening the 5 small bolts or you will smoosh it over and the timing mark will be off. also if you used a gasket on the oil pan the front crank trigger may not get enough signal output to the computer

Okay, so I went out, set the timing to what you guys showed in the pictures, yet my distributor is 180 off. I thought this wasn't possible?

What should I do now?

if you turn the crankshaft 1 revolution the timing mark will be straight up, takes 2 turns of crankshaft to turn camshaft once

So is the crankshaft off? Or is the camshaft off? Because I thought I lined up the crank right; I'm almost 100% positive the #1 cylinder is all the way up where it is at currently.

In the one picture freegeo posted, the dot on the cam is straight up and the distributor rotor is straight up, yet my dot on the cam is straight up and my distributor is upside down. How is this possible?

turn the crankshaft 1 revolution and check the marks

not the camshaft, the crankshaft

I rotated the crankshaft two full revolutions and the cam was in the exact same spot; the marks did align. I just don't know whether the cam is off, the distributor is off, or the crank is at this point. I went off all the marks you guys have in those pictures above and that's what my distributor now looks like.

turn the crankshaft 1 revolution only, not 2, recheck the marks

The key is to make sure the dowel pin in the cam is at six o'clock and than use the timing mark opposite it.

for 360 degrees of crankshaft revolution the camshaft moves 180 degrees
