Knock/rattle/metal shearing sound? Cold/hot

Tryn Hard!!

Ok, so I put a new clutch and flywheel in the car, ever since then there has been a funny metal shearing noise around 1500-2500 rpm, it doesn't do.it all the time just kind of randomly. But that hadn't bothered me to much I figured eh maybe it's just new parts breaking in... well here I am 3000 miles later, still doing it, and about 3 days ago (200-300ish miles ago) the car started making a fluid like sloshing sound going around corners slow, like think of water in a gallon jug with water in it, that sort of worried me, but then now shortly after that my motor has developed a tick/knock sound... oil looks clean as it's only maybe 1000 miles old.. I keep my oil changed very regularly, it doesnt knock all the time, it's random, it seems to do it when cold, maybe 3 or 4 times, but it did do it when warm bad yesterday afternoon... the car hasn't lost any power at all still runs good, two or three days ago (after it had been sitting) it did miss for like a SPLIT SECOND n there was a little water that came out the exhaust so I don't think that's relevant but figured I'd add in to be safe.

so the clutch and flywheel was the only work you did-nothing inside the engine?

Yep that's it, everything was loctited and torqued to spec, as well as all new rear main seal, axle seals, fluid

Update! The water pump failed completely.. bearings went out and pulley is bent over lol so that's fun

man that sucks-nothing from your temp gauge? i'm not surprised mine went out and I didn't even know it-those gauges are worthless with any air in the system-

In retrospect, were there any clues, like coolant loss? On two occasions I changed the water pump once it started leaking. Never had one fail on me. Now I change them every 200K whether they leak or not to coincide with the timing belt.

I wonder if the water pump bearing failure was secondary? Usually noise is the final stage of failure, preceded by coolant loss.

Not always will you see coolant loss... sometimes the bearing just bites it and takes the fins, belt, and pulley with it. I'm sure after catastrophic failure the coolant got out but not always before.

Yep I didn't have any coolant loss... we had to seal the coolant tube with the old oring and gasket maker because it was accidently pulled out when we did the clutch... shortly after that is when the water pump went lol... which its been like 2500 miles since the clutch was done... I'm going to hate doing that gasket stuff again though lol... anyways I'm buying an ACdelco water pump, and gates timing belt and tensioner and getting that all done together... I'm hoping the pump didn't damage anything when it failed, there wasn't any sign from the temp gauze that it was failing til it just failed... I knew I kept hearing that shearing sound and it had been getting on my nerves, but I guess I know now what it was haha... am I getting good brand replacements for the water pump and timing belt/tensioner? I'm getting it all for like $53

don't think you'll have to do the pipe o-ring again-the pump unbolts just towards the passenger fender from there and there is a gasket for the 2 halves which should come with your new water pump-

Not coincidentally, one reason a water pump can fail is cavitation caused by excess air in the system, such as can commonly occur when the system has not been adequately bled following a repair.

"New part breaking in" should never sound like parts breaking, and a break in process is typically not a "random" event.

For future reference, quite often when something doesn't sound right, something's wrong.

Brandon, trying to imagine the sound you described for future reference. Does it sound like a whistling teapot? Train wheels squealing against the tracks?

Yep that is basically what it sounded like lol, it was more or less random, and then it turned into being constant, and VERY shortly after being constant, the pump failed, so I was told it is the bearing in the pump went out, don't know if it was a cheap pump, or if no one replaced the pump when they did the timing belt... for $25 more to replace the pump, Idk why you wouldn't to save the labor, beats me... but I will be getting everything fixed on it lol. Hopefully nothing else messes up, doing a lot of maintainance this past month on this car, I did notice a small bubbled spot under my driver side door on the rocker panel... I was hoping my metro wouldn't rust... but I guess it finally is after having it 2 1/2 years... hopefully those are easy fixes cuz I really don't want to get rid of it as much parts as I've put in it

You said it gave no warning, just died (the water pump)
But in retrospect didn't it make crazy noise?
