Currently replacing the head on my 94 metro 3 cylinder. Gotten to the point where i have tdc on the cam with both the number two and three lobes pointing straight up, but when i put the cam gear on the metal dot doesn't line up with the mark on the valve cover. any help?

the pin on the cam shaft itself must be at six. does it matter if a lobe is pushing down on a valve?

Line the marks up and put the belt on it.

Ok did it. It pushes an exhaust valve down on two and an intake on three. Is that right

TDC 1 both valves should be closed, the piston has to go all the way back down to BDC before the exhaust valve will begin to open, then all the way back up before you see the intake valve start to open. There are two timing marks on the gear, make sure you are using the right one, there are lots of good pix here and on google.

OK, I'm gonna ask,
Why are you so worried about what position the valves are in??
If you line up the marks, they WILL be in the correct position.
You seem to be overthinking this whole procedure.

Make that "line up the correct marks" and you have the my vote for brilliant advice of the day. :cheers :D

Following the factory procedure to get it right the first time is too easy? ;)

copy that. first time doing any car work and i decided to replace the head and water pump. kinda nervous about the correct positioning and all. copy all of the above. lined up the dowell with 6'oclock and have the notch with the 80C mark on the cam gear pointed at the valve cover mark. both valves on 1 are closed. sounds good to me. cant wait to put this baby back together.

You have the #1 piston at TDC also right.

both valves on 1 are closed.
#1 is all that matters.

#1 piston all the way up

#1 valves both closed

#1 plug wire tower the rotor pointeth to

Cam dowel pin pointing down at the crank, and all marks lining up
