Replaced Heater Core, Still No Heat! Bad Thermostat?

WOW, chill a bit.

First, what I meant by warranty work was that the repair shop has to warranty their own work, no manufacturers involved. If I'm running a garage and someone brings in a 25 year old car, whoever built it in the first place is of no concern. My only concern is not getting stuck doing a lot of extra work that was not included in the estimate, and not having to do it again two weeks later because of a $2 part.

My comment about RockAuto was poorly worded. I'm very much aware that they offer Chinese junk and high quality (although probably also Chinese made) parts, but I didn't make that clear. From the repair shop's point of view it makes far more sense to make the customer pay for the quality part from the start, it greatly reduces the possibility that you're going to have to eat the labor of replacing a bad part.

In my business, I have to do the same sort of thing. If a billable customer (an out of the ordinary thing, most people have a service contract) calls to get their copier repaired because it jams from tray 1, I don't just go out there and put rollers in tray 1 and walk. I go over the whole machine and give them a written estimate of EVERYTHING I think the machine needs to bring it to factory specs. This is very often thousands of dollars of work and parts. If they then decide they want rollers and nothing else, I do it and walk away with a signed estimate saying what the customer declined. A written document saying that they get a warranty on tray 1 rollers alone. It's the same sort of thinking that I'm talking about here. If it were my own machine I would probably take a shot on rollers alone because it's my problem if something else goes wrong. In today's F the small businessman for everything you can get society, you just can't operate like that for very long.

Also consider Canadian dollars, 160 = 120 US

So? I'm not driving down to the USA and offering an American mechanic Canadian dollars. I'm inside Canada, paying a Canadian mechanic Canadian money. $1=$1 over here

Also, NAPA parts are often the worst quality, cheapest made part out of all the options. I bought a Stant thermostat for $12.50 CAD off Amazon. Pretty sure it's the same or better quality than the "NAPA brand" thermostat NAPA would have charged me $20 for.

Anyway, we are getting into some unrelated discussions here.

I am now 100% sure that the thermostat is the issue. The cardboard in front of the radiator is working really well and allowing the car to heat up to operating temperature, and we're getting that lava heat. :rocker

Fixed the thermostat. It was an easy job, even with the distributor cap partly blocking access. The Stant superstat fit perfectly and the gasket fit perfectly as well. Used a tiny bit of silicone permatex along with the gasket just for extra measure. Will check up regularly on the seal over the next couple of weeks to make sure it doesn't leak. But the thermostat works really well. The car is warming up to operating temperature faster than it's ever done before and staying there. Getting awesome heat. Super happy!
