Hey guys, I just want to say thank you so much for all of your help in the past. You guys have helped me through a lot of hard times. I just had two Axels and input seals put on my car, the mechanic changed my oil and I've fidden about 500 miles and now there is a tapping sound coming from the top end. I took it back to him and he said it was a lifter and that was pretty much it for the car. So, does anybody know any tricks on how to clean the gunk out so that my lifters and get the oil they do desperately need.? Or is this it? 4th quarter, two minute warning. Buy another car.. Anybody got any tricks that will help me get another 30,000 miles out of this car? It's a 96 Geo Metro with a hundred seventy thousand miles on it. I love it and I want to live forever. |

5w30 is my oil. It does have an oil pump leak so I have to keep an eye on the level. The sound is intermittent right now. |

Those engines have a common problem with rocker arms or the small lifters in them. May want to pull valve cover and check that! The lifters can be replaced he just doesn't want to work on it sounds like to me. There is bound to be a member near you that can help you diagnose it and repair it. If you do like guys say and try 5w30 oil just change it a few times that may clean lifter maybe you will get lucky.

Various members carry spare rocker arms around with them in case they crap out. Look for wear on the side of each rocker. |

Thanks for the advice, should I try an engine cleaner? Also, this sounds pretty simple to replace. And finally, can I still drive it? Or shoud I just park it? |

it sounds like to me the rockers and lifters need to be checked-it's not too hard of a job but I get the impression you don't do any of your own work so I will spare the details-on my 96 1.3 synthetic oil makes a big difference in the amount of drivetrain noise-but it also tends to leak out more so you should get that oil pump fixed before using it-a small amount of marvel mystery oil or rislone in the oil may help free stickey lifters- |

you can still drive it-just keep checking your oil due to the leak-I drove 40 miles on one dead cylinder because a rocker and lifter crapped out and it took me about 1/2 hour to fix |

Twice you referred to an oil pump leak. I am guessing you need a new crank shaft seal, which is often replaced with the timing belt. I mention this in case someone is telling you you need to replace the oil pump. |

No, the oil pump leak didn't get fixed when I did the water pump and timing belt. Figured I missed my chance on it. |

Junk yard rocker with a lifter my man. Easy easy fix, should cost you about $10. 10mm socket and a short extension is all you need. Pull the valve cover @ junkyard, undo the intake rocker arm, start at the outside edges and loosen towards the center. Grab the best 2 (so you have a spare). When you install just watch the springs & washers don't fly off, & get them on in the correct order. I carry several spares. I've had to replace one in every g13 I've owned. #4 exhaust valve/rocker/lifter is usually the culprit in my experience. |

that's good advice it's very possible that the seal is leaking and not the oil pump you would just have to remove the timing cover to see-if it was you would just have to remove the timing belt again and not the water pump-good practice in my opinion-if it is the oil pump leaking maybe you could try to tighten the bolts which secure it to the block while you are in there |
